Description
July 4, 1950 N. J. PETERS cooxms APPARATUS Original Filed July 22, 1946 INVENTOR. 710M MQ F/LAQQZ.
ATTORNLYS Patented July 4, 1950 COOKING APPARATUS Norman J. Peters, Fond du Lac, Wis., assignor to Damrow Brothers Company, Fond du Lac, Wis., a corporation of Wisconsin Original application July 22, 1946, Serial No. 685,460. Divided and this application May 8, 1948, Serial No. 25,821
copending application Serial No. 685,460, filed July 22, 1946, for Cooking Apparatus, and relates to the feature of mounting the feed screw on a half sleeve bearing at one end and a bearing unit at the other end disposed outside the cooking area, and in this connection a further object of the invention is to provide an improved form of packing gland for the feed screw which permits ready removal of said feed screw from the housing for cleaning.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter described and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is an elevation view of a cooking apparatus embodying the invention, parts being broken away;
Fig. 2 is a detailed sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the 11118 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a frame in which the cooker and its drive mechanism are mounted. The cooker includes a jacketed trough 6 adapted to be heated by steam introduced into the jacket as more particularly shown and described in the aforementioned application, Serial No. 685,460, and having a feed screw I mounted therein including a shaft I which extends through a partition II and is connected by a detachable flanged coupling [2 with a shaft I3 journalled in a bearing I4 and carrying a sprocket connected by an endless chain I with a sprocket on a shaft I6 connected by a gear reduction I! to the drive shaft I8 of an electric motor I9. At its front end the shaft Ii] is mounted on a half bearing B carried by an end plate P, and at its rear end one part of coupling I2 is slidably keyed thereto by a key K on the shaft sufficiently long so that, when the coupling bolts C are disconnected, said coupling part can be slid forwardly toward the partition when the shaft I0 is tilted upwardly from its half bearing B and then moved forwardly to separate the coupling parts a sufficient distance to permit the coupling member I2 on shaft In to be again slid rearwardly and removed from the end of said shaft.
1 Claim. (Cl. 259-409) A packing gland for the drive shaft II]: at the point where it passes through the partition II is provided, said gland being provided with removable parts which permits the removal of the shaft IE] through the opening 23in the partition I I when its coupling part I2 is removed as above described. This gland includes a pair of male metal gland members 20, a pair of female metal gland members 2!, a packing ring 22, and means for operatively connecting said gland members together and to the partition I I including a metal ring member 23, an apertured clamping plate 24, and stud bolts 25.
The ring member 23 is secured to the partition by welding as indicated and is concentric with an opening 26 in the partition which is smaller than the inner diameter of said ring, so that a portion of said partition forms a flange 21 extending inwardly from said ring, said ring being provided with radially disposed notches 28 and forming a housing for said female gland.
The female gland members 2| are formed as cylindrical half sections which when assembled together have an outer cylindrical surface which has a sliding fit within the ring 23 and is provided with an annular recess 29 at one end, one side of which abuts the flange 21 and the other side of which extends through the opening 26. The members 2| are also bored so as to provide a cylindrical bore 30 having an inner tapered end 3| engaging the packing ring 22. Each section of this gland is provided with an arm or pin 32 adapted to engage in one of the notches 28 in the ring 23 to permit ready removal of said gland members when necessary.
The male gland members 20 are formed as cylindrical half sections which when assembled together form a cylindrical bearing with an annular flange portion 33 and a body portion 34 which slidably fits the bore 30 and has a tapered end 35 engaging the packing ring 22.
The metal clamping plate 24 has a bore 36 which slidably fits the shaft I0 and spaced holes through which the studs 25 pass and nuts 31 are mounted on these studs and turned to bear against said plate so as to move the same against the flanged end of the male gland and move this gland relative to the female gland to clamp the packing ring between them with the desired amount of sealing pressure on the shaft Ill. The packing ring 22 may also be made in two complementary half sections.
The above described gland construction has been found to be especially useful in cookers where sanitation is essential, and it has the following advantages:
(1) The packing gland which contacts the material to be cooked can be easily cleaned without removing the screw by merely loosening the plate 24 and removing the split gland, the arms 32 aiding in this removal.
(2) A one piece screw and shaft construction can be used, thereby eliminating any couplings or the like which previously had to be used inside the cooking area to permit removal of the screw. The screw removal is now made possible by disconnection of the members forming the coupling l2 which is located outside the cooking area.
When this is done and the gland members 20 and 2| removed and that part of the coupling l2 attached to shaft l0 removed, as previously described, the hole 26 in the plate is of such size that the other end of the screw in the cooking compartment or trough 6 can be further tilted upwards, thereby allowing the screw to be pulled forward and out of trough 6.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any particular form or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are included in the claim.
What I claim as my invention is:
In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a trough, a feed screw mounted to revolve in said trough and having a front end bearing permitting upward tilting of said screw in said trough, a drive shaft having a detachable coupling connection with said screw, a partition between said trough and said coupling having an opening larger than said shaft, and a packing gland for the shaft where it passes through said partition comprising separable and removable gland members which on removal and the detachment of said coupling connection permit removal of said shaft through said opening in said partition as said shaft is tilted upwardly at its front end for removal from said trough.
