7 P. STARKEL.
BARREL HANDLING DEVICE. I
v No. 251,312. Patented Dec. 20,1881.
fianzi' ffair/562 lily- UNITE STATES PATENT Orrlcat FRANK STARKEL, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
BARREL-HANDLING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,312, dated December 20, 1881.
Application filed August 6, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK STAR-KEL, of Quincy, in the county of Adams .and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Devices for Handling Barrels, ofwhich the following-is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of devices especially designed for the use of brewers in handling barrels and larger packages during the process of pitching; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a perspective of one of the clamps detached.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a suitable swinging derrick mounted upon the platform frame B.
0 represents a bail,,designed to be hooked upon the derrick, as shown, the lower end of which bail is pivotally secured to the frame D, the two cross-bars E of which are adjustable upon the side bars, so as to take in barrels or packages of different lengths.
Through the longitudinal center of each of the bars E isproperlyjournaled a short shaft, a, providednpon its outer end with a crankhandle, I), and upon itsinner end with the disk F, the outer face of which latter is provided with a projecting worm or scroll, 0. Between these disks F and their respective bars the spiders G are properly sleeved upon the shaft, the outer ends of the arms of which are provided with the sliding extensions H, the inner faces of which are provided with the fingers d, which project within the scroll of the disk F.
(No model.)
lengths so as to receive and hold the barrel I,
which it is desired to pitch or operate upon,
with the disks F coming in contact with the heads of the barrel or cask. By then rotating the shafts a the spiders are caused to rotate, while theirrespective scrolls, coming in contact with the fingers d of the extension-arms of the spiders, project them outward, causing them to come in contact with the chine of the barrel, securely looking it within the frame. It is then raised by means of a derrick, when hot pitch may he introduced into the barrel and be evenly distributed over the inner sur' face thereof by rotating the barrel by means of the crank-handles.
The construction and operation of this device are so simple that a further description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a device for handling barrels, and in combination with the bail C thereof, the frame D, adjustable bars E of said frame, clampingdisks F, shafts a, and the cranks b, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The adjustable frame D E, in combination with the shafts a, spiders G, disk F, provided with a scroll, c, the jaws H, provided with fingers d, to engage with the scroll c, and with similar fingers at their outer ends to engage with the ba-rrel-chine, the cranks b, and a suitable derrick, substantially as described.
FRANK STARKEL.
