UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE the results in working the leather is dependent. The groovef has straight radial sides, which extend from the face inward toward the axis of the roller, and the radial sides are at a right angle to the axis. In the present instance this roller is also made in two parts, which separate at a point within the groovef, and a circular knife, 9, is secured between the parts.
It will be seen by reference to Fig. 1 that the knife of each roller is opposite the other, and that the edgeproject-s but slightly, as the depth of the channel to be cut is slight. These two rollers are mounted each 011 a separate shaft, and the position of the rollers with respect to each other is shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
Fig. 4E illustrates one form of apparatus on which the rollers may be mounted.
The letter I designates a stand or workbench; L, a standard mounted thereon; N, an arm pivoted at it to the standard. This arm carries the roller B, while the roller A is mounted at the upper curved end of the standard.
A spring or a weight may be employed to press the roller 13 up against the roller A. In the present instance this is done by a spring, h, at one end of the arm, while arod, n, at the other end extends to near the floor, and may be attached to a treadle, (not shown,) by depressing which with the foot the one roller is retracted or removed from the other. An apparatus of different form or construction may be used; but the one described illustrates the essential features. These rollers may readily be mounted on the shafts of the well-known creasing-machines which are employed in all large harness-manufacturing establishments.
The operation is as follows: One roller is slightly withdrawn from the other, and the end ofa strip of leather, 1;, which has been through the preliminary operation of dampening and splitting to a uniform thickness, is folded by bringing the two edges (1 together, and the folded end is then inserted in the grooved roller and between the two rollers, as shown in Fig. 3. The two edges of the folded strip must be in contact with one of the radial and right-angled sides of the groove. By turning the crank m the rollers are made to revolve, and the strip of leather is drawn through, being folded, channeled, and compacted, all in one operation, to the form shown in Fig. 5; or, as before stated, the first three steps of the process of rounding leather is done in a very superior manner by this single operation of the rollers. The two edges of the strip will be found to be perfectly even, and exactly coincide with each other, which results from the fact that the strip passes through the groove with the two edgcsot'the strip resting against one of the radial and right-angled sides of the groove.
The letter T denotes the channel, 8 the fillerstrip, and t the stitches.
The advantages are obvious. A great econ: omy is effected and a better product results.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a machine to be employed in forming leather round, the combination of a roller having in its face a groove, and provided with a circular knife extending around the groove, and a second roller having a face adapted to enter the groove of the first roller and provided with a circular knife extending around the face, as set forth.
2. The herein-described method of preparing a fiat strip of leather to convert it into a strip having a round form, consisting in folding the strip longitudinally by bringing the two edges together and passing the folded strip between suitable rollers, with the two edges of the strip at a right angle to the axis of the rollers, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES W. ROGERS.
