SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,270, dated December 20, 1881.
Application filed September 24, 1881. (ModeL) .To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS MERRIFIELD, of La Grange, in the county of La Grange and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Qowls, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a durable, efficient, and inexpensive cowl, one having such construction that it will tend to increase the draft of the flue rather than 0bstruct it, and one which will present a nice appearance when in place upon the chimney or pipe.
My invention consists of a semi c lindrical hood open at the ends and adapted to be swiveled upon the chimney or pipe, and to be held to the wind by means of a suitable vane, the windward side of the hood being formed at the ends with beveled orinwardly-crimped deflectors, which cause the wind, as it sweeps past the cowl, to act as an exhaust in the flue.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in
responding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved cowl. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 shows the form of blank which I employ in making the hood.
1n the drawings,A represents thehood. B represents the vane, and G the vertical rod placed in the flue D, upon which rod the hood is swiveled by means of the bent rod E, secured to the hood, and through which the vertical rod passes.
In making the hood I first cut from sheet metal a blank in the form shown in Fig. 3, having the extended side pieces, d d, which side pieces are slitted, as shown. I then bend the blank by any suitable means into semicylindrical form, and finally bend orcrimp in the side pieces, d d, so as to form the beveled guards or deflectors at the ends of the hood, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. rod E is then secured by any suitable means to the hood in about the center of its length, and to the upper end of this rod is attached the vane 13, which holds the vane above the top of the cowl or hood, as shown in the drawings.
The vertical rod 0 may be secured in the flue by any suitable means, preferably by means of the bar F at the upper end of the flue and the bar F, arranged a short distance below the said upper end of the flue and crossing the same at right angles to the bar F, the said bars being perforated in the center for the passage of the vertical rod for holding the same centrally in the flue.
The hood should be of such width as to reach over the line and the lower edges of it to come a short distance below the upper edge or end of the flue, about as shown in Fig. l, and it should be of such length as to reach several inches past the flue at both sides, so as to completely exclude all rain, snow, and wind from the flue.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The semi-cylindrical hood A, formed with the beveled deflectors d d at its ends, in combination with the vane B and means, substantially as described, for swiveling the same to the fine, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The cowl made substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the semicylindrical hood A, formed with the beveled or turned-in deflectors d d, vertical rods 0, and bent rod E, carrying the vane B, as and for the purposes set forth.
