PANTALOON GUARD 0R PROTBGTUR.
No. 251,257. Patented Deo. 2o,1881.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTIN LIGABUE, OF PARIS,'FRANGE'.
PANTALOON GUARD OR PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,257, dated December 20, 1881. Application filed February 23, 1881. (No model.) Patented in France February 19, 1879.
.To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, AUGUSTIN LIGABUE, ef the city of Paris, in the Republic ot' France, tailor, have invented an Apparatus for Keeping the Trouser-Legs Clean, ot' which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pantaloon-protecting guards which are employed for preventing` the bottom edges of the legs from coming in contact with the ground.
My invention consists in combining with a a flexible band of steel or other suitable material a series of independent vertical fingers or supports, which, when the band is secured to theleg, extend below the bottom edge of the latter, andthereby preventthesamefrom coming in contact with the ground. These supports or fingers are detachably connected with the flexible band in various ways, as hereinafter described.
1n the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the flexible band with a series of supports or fingers detachably connected therewith. Fig. 2shows the various parts ofthese supports detached. Fig. 3 illustrates a modication, and Fig. 4 the supports and means for connecting the same with the iiexible band detached. Fig. 5 illustrates another modification, and Fig. 6 the supports and the means of attaching the same to the band detached.
A indicates a exible band of steel or other suitable material, the said band being curved, as shown in the several iigures ofthe drawings, in order to adapt it to tit against the iuner side of `a trouser-leg and preserve the usual form of the same. can be secured to the inside ofthe leg in a varietyof ways-as, forinstance, by means ofpins or by providing it with perforations, so that it can be stitched onto the leg. The band is provided at intervals with vertical ngers or supports, which will extend slightly below the bottom edge of the leg in order to prevent the latter from coming in contact with the ground. In Fig. l these supports c consist of a plate, e, which'is secured in any suitable way to the flexible band and bent upon itself to form the short arm e', the upper end of the portion of the plate which is secured to the band being formed with lugs a, in which is journaled the pivot ot1 a pin, g, and the upper end of the short This iiexible bandY arm cot'said plate beingformed with a notched lip, e2, f'or receiving the pin after the latter has been passed through the material of the trouser-leg. By means of these pins, therefore, the iiexible band will be secured to the leg, and when desired it can be readily detached therefrom, or adjusted so as to cause the supports to extend to a greater or less distance below the bottom edge of the leg.
In Fig. 3 a seriesofhemispherical buttons, l1., are secured to the inner side of the flexible band, and each provided with a screw-threaded socket, i, Fig. 4, in which the screw-threaded shank la ot' the support c can be secured. These buttons have each a shank, h', for securing the same to the ilexible band.
In the moditicatiou shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the band is provided with a series of hollow hemispherical buttons, l, with which the supports or fingers c are detachably connected, as follows: Each support consists of a springplate bent to form the two spring-arms m m, the upper end of one or both of which has a rectangular-shaped plate, a. The button has a bottom plate, p, formed with two slots, q q,'in tersecting each other at right angles. To connect the support with this button, the springarms m are pressed together and the plates thereon passed through one of the slots qinto the hollow button, after which, by releasing the pressure on said arms, they will spring apart and pass into the slot, which is at right angles to the slot through which the plates n have been thus passed, thereby holding the support in connection with the button.
Vhat I claim is;
As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described guard for preventing the trouser-leg from touching the ground, consisting -in a semi-flexible semicircular band adapted to be secured to the inner side of the leg near its bottom, and provided with a series of independent vertical fingers extending down lfrom said band to such extent that when the band is applied the lower ends of the fingers will extend down below the leg, as specitied.
