FOLDING INVALID CHAIR Patented Deo. 20,1881.
No. 251,248. v
INVENTOR Y WITNESSES :v QW
ATTORNEYS,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN O. KLETT, OE NEw YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING INVALID-CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,248, dated December 20, 1881.
Application iled August 29, 1881.
To all whom t may concern: y
Be it known that I, JOHN C. KLETT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new Improvement in Folding Invalid-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish a chair convenient for use in sick-rooms, and which can be folded into small compass for transportation or when not required for use.
The invention consists of a folding chair of novel construction and arrangement, as hereinafter described, and pointed outin the claims.
Reference is to be had to the'accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of my improved chair. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view ofthe chair with the seat raised and the sides removed.
A is the back, B B the sides, and O the apen tured seat, of the chair. These may be of any suitable form and ornamented as desired.
The back A is tted with side strips, a, to which the sides B are attached by hinges b, and with a cross-piece, c, to which the seat is attached by hinges d, so that the seat can be folded upward against the back and the sides then folded inward against the seat. To the front edge of the seat is hinged a front board, e, which can be folded against the seat when the latter is raised. The side pieces, c, give space for the seat C and front board, e, so that the sides can be folded flat.
The sides B are grooved at f on their inner surfaces to receive the edges of the seat, which project slightly beyond the board e, so that the seat is prevented from rising. At the inner (No model.)
side of the board e there are hooks g, which engage eyes attached ou sides B, so as to retain the parts iu place. The sides B are also formed with grooveshh, thatl receive the ends of a shelf', D, which is thus sustained beneath the seat C. lThe back A is slotted at z' in line with grooves h, to allow insertion and removal of the shelt` after the chair is set up. A hinged door, k, is fitted in the back above the shelf D for convenience in inserting and removing the vessel.
The shelf D is in two pieces hinged together, so that it can be folded for packing between the side strips, a, and beneath the sides B. The strip c at one side has a groove, l, for receiving the end of the folded shelf, so that it is held in place' as shown in Fig. 3.
By this construction the chair can be compactly folded and readily set up for use.
A cover is provided for the aperture in the seat and a cushion may be hinged at the rear ofthe seat, for use either to cover the seat or as a backcushion.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The folding invalid -chair consisting of back A, provided with strips a and door 7c, hinged sides B B, provided with'grooves fh, hinged seat O, fitted with hinged board c, and the removable shelt'D, combined substantially as shown and described.
2. A folding invalid-chair provided with
