Description
R. SIMON SECTIONAL TRAVEL CHEST June 20, 1950 I m/en tor fab elv Jinn/v O 29 and Attorneys l hlnw Q Filed Sept. 20, 1945 Patented June 20, 1950 UNITED STATES AT Z NTIQIQFF SECTIONAL TRAVEL CHEST Ruben Simon, Pontiac, Mich.
Application September 20, 1945, Serial No. 617,550
1 Claim. (01. 312-107) My invention relates to improvements in lugage and has for an object to provide a chest of drawers so formed that they may be carried as a satchel for use in traveling.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sectional satchel or the like.
A further object of my invention is to provide a chest consisting of a series of detachably connected drawers.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a chest of interchangeably connectible drawers.
Another object of the invention is to provide .a chest of sectional drawers each section of which is identically formed.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my travel chest,
Figure 2 is a similar view illustrating the same in disconnected stacked position,
Figure 3 is a broken away sectional view of a pair of sections,
Figure 4 is a broken front elevational view of one section of the device,
Figure 5 is a detail view of a carrying handle,
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6 thereof,
Figure 7 is a sectional view taken on line 1-1 of Figure 1, and
Figure 8 is a detail sectional view illustrating a modified connecting means.
In the accompanying drawings as above enumerated and in the following specification, like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout and in which 10 indicates my invention, which comprises a series of cases ll, l2 and [3, all of which are identically formed and the top wall [4, of each is rabbetted around the sides 15, i6 and H, in order to receive the depending portions l8, of adjoining members when seated thereon. In the central portion of wall l4, of each case is a countersink l9, into which a hinged handle 20 may be folded in order not to interfere with another case which may be placed upon said wall. Within each of the said cases is slidably seated a drawer 2|, 2|, etc., each of said drawers being provided with a lock as indicated at 22, and also a countersunk recess 23, forming a handhold through means of which the drawers may be opened. The said cases ll, l2 and I3, are adapted to be secured together by fasteners 24.
In Figure 8, I show a slight modification of the 2 invention in which each of the cases are provided with dovetail recesses 25, adapted to receive the similarly formed tongue 26, of an adjoining case whereby the said members may be slidably secured together.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided an expansible chest of drawers, any number of which can be connected together and any one or more of which maybe interchanged relative to others thereof. While this device is intended primarily for campers, tourists, boy and girl scouts, etc., and which device may be readily placed in the trunk of an automobile and may be set up as an entirety or may be separated to slip under cots or other beds, it also may be used in several connected sections as a hand satchel which may be conveniently carried upon trains or other transports. Furthermore, because of its disconnectable sections it may be stored in close quarters when not in use.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having now described my invention that which I claim asnew and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
A sectional cabinet construction comprising a plurality of stacked similarly formed cabinets, each cabinet consisting of a pair of sides, a back, a top and a bottom, a drawer slidably positioned in each cabinet, said top including a, raised tongue portion .and said bottom including a dovetail groove engaging said raised tongue portion of the next succeeding cabinet for slidable, locking engagement of each cabinet section, a pin secured to each cabinet adjacent the bottom thereof and a latch pivotally secured to each cabinet adjacent the top thereof releasably engaging the pin of the cabinet immediately above preventing sliding movement between the stacked cabinets, the top of each of said cabinets being provided with a countersunk portion and a. handle secured in said countersunk portion, whereby each cabinet may be individually carried and will not interfere when said cabinets are stacked.
RUBEN SIMON.
