' UNITED 4STATES PATENT OFFICE.
wim-inert von PITTLER s T E A M SPECIFICATION :forming para ef Lettere r Application filed April 18, 1881.
To all whom vt may concern:
Be it known that @WILHELM VON PI'rTLER, in the German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Engines, of which the following Vis a My invention relates to steam-.enginesconnected with the s teamgenerator and operated steam; and my invention consists in the construction of a firechamber surrounded by a series of' pipes and closed by a plate, to which a heavyanetal (caststeel) chamber is attached, extending down- A. small quantity of water is at each stroke dt the engine injected into the surrounding pipes by means ofa suitable pump, the discharge or supply'valve of which is regulated by a suitable governor. The
thus-injected water is converted into steam in these heated pipes, and passes then into the heavymetal chamber, where it is converted into superheated steam before ente'ring'the steam-cylinder, which latter is placed into said In the accompanying drawings, Figure l rep ator with engine attached. Fig. itis a top view of the same,
and Fig. 3 is an outside elevation.
Similar letters represent similar parts.
The steam-generator consistsof asuitable base-plate or frame, E, supporting the grate, bars H, and a top plate, F, between which a number of upright tubes, 2, are arranged close to each other and-surrounding the grate-bars. One tube is connected with theadjoining tube, above and below the flanges oftheframe E and top plate, T, by suitable cap-pieces, J, forming a communication from one tube with the next so that the water from which the' steam is to e generated will pass down one tube and upward in the next tube, then downward again in the adjoining tube and upward again in the next, and so on. These cap-pieces Jform at the-Sametime slip-joints for the tubes, to alor Lnirsio, GEIRMAY.
ENGINE.
arent No. 251,144, dated December 2o, i881.
(No model.) Patented in Germany February 12, 188i.
`ot' the fire. A suitable casing, P, surrounds the outside of these pipcs,'and in said casing the ire-doorN is arranged.
metal (preferably cast-steel) chamber, A, is arranged, extending some distance downward into the fire-chamber. F, formed by the gratcscribed. luto this metal chamber A the 'steamcylinder C, with its slide-val ve K, but without; any valve-case, is placed, the pistou-rod passing through asuitable stufiing-box in thecover of said chamber A, and connected with the moving parts ofthe engine, arranged upon the top plate, T, in any suitable manner.
The engine is vprovided with a suitable feedv pump, B, to supply the generator with water, und the discharge-pipen of said pump is prvided with a suitable regulating-valve, m, operated bya governor, R, attached to the engine. The water to be converted finto superheated steamisinjected,by means of the pump B,into one of the tubes,
pipes t', as above described, into the pipez, from where it passes through pipe b into the red-hot l heated metal chamber A, to be con'- verted into superheated steam, surrounding the steam-cylinder C and slide-valve K, and passing then-above or below/the edge of said slide-valve K, in the usual manner, into thc cylinder C, to operate its piston, and through its piston-rod the crankshaft, in thepsnal manne-r. The escape-steam passes through a suitable pipe, G, connected with the exhaust of the cylinder, into the atmosphere, or may be used t0 heat the Water t0 bcinjected into the generator.
The slide-valve K is operated inthe Vusual mgshaft, andthe quantity of water to be injected into the pipes z' of the generator is regulated by means ofthe governor R, operating shall be in proportion to used .in the steam-cylintity of water injected the quantity of steam der.
wholly or partially, with a regular and constant ,In the center of the top plate, T, a very heavy bars H, pipes 1', and top plate, T, as above de-V li-say into y' and circulates, then as water and steam through the series of manner by means of an eccentric on the drivand regulating the valve m, so that the quan- ICO ' quantity of water to be converted into steam plate, T, with heavy-metal chamber A, extend-` I andI anni' likewise aware that the top oft)J :steam` 'boilerv has been constructed with a chamber extending downward into the steamspaee with its appropriate slide-valve, has
arrangement, broadly; but
What I claim as my invention, to secure by Letters Patent, is
' The steam-generator F, consisting of a suitable fireplace or grate-bars, H, surrounded by and desire pipes "i, commnnicating with each other, top
ing downward into the generator F, and pipe b, in combination with the steam-cylinder O of and its slide-.Valve K, in olosed in said chamber theboiler, and in which said chamber the steam-4l `cylinder,
' A, the-feed-pump B, supply-valve m, and governor Rthe whole being constructed and arbeen placed, and therefore do not claim this ranged to operate substantially-in the manner 'zo and for the' purpose herein deseribed.
