THOMAS HULME, or GALVESTON, TEXAS.
REGENERATOR FOR COMPOUND ENGI NES.
PSPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,826, dated January 13, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HULME, of Galveston, county of Galveston, Texas, have invented a new and Improved Regenerator for Compound Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to certain improvements in that class of engines in which the products of combustion pass from the furnace around one or more of the steam-cylinders; and it consistsin the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which the apparatus is shown by a sectional elevation as applied to a steam-vessel.
A represents the boilers and furnace; B, the smoke-stack; O, the high-pressure and D the lower pressure cylinder. The furnace connects to the smokestack directly, and also by a divergent trunlgwhich is enlarged to forma chamber, E, so that all the products of com bustion shall pass through the chamber when the damper F in the direct flue is closed. The low-pressure cylinder is Within the chamber E, which is large enough to leave space around the cylinder sufficient for draft. The packing-glands of the piston and valve rods project below the bottom of the chamber, so as to be accessible, and the chamber will have removable sides or plates to give access to the cylinder-head and steamchest cover. The damper F is to be open when the fire is just started, and when the engine is at rest. By this arrangement condensation in the cylinder is prevented and the temperature of the steam raised, so as to cause expansion, and consequently increased pressure.
The trunk or chamber may be covered to prevent radiation of heat in any suitable manner.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The regenerator for steam-engines herein described, consisting of a casing surrounding a steam-cylinder and connected with the uptake-flue, dampers being provided for closing the uptake and the entrance therefrom to the said casing, whereby the products of combustion may be either directed through the uptake or through the casing around said cylin der, as set forth.
. THOMAS HULME.
