Description

(No Model.) I W. FABIAN.
GAS LAMP.
No. 251,102. Patented Dec. 20,1881.
a A l mi i MIL 1' J; 2 W01] umi\\ A I \x. I H I -99) INVENTOR ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEINRICH W. FABIAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GAS-LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 251,102, dated December 20, 1881. Application filed June 3, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH W. FABIAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved gaslamp, and has for its object to increase the illuminating powerof the same -toits maximum capacity by a preparatory heating up of the air and illuminating-gas. conducted to the flame.
The accompanying drawing representsa side elevation of two gas-lamps on a common stand, one lamp being shown in vertical central section, the other in side view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawing, A represents the gas-conducting tube, which passes centrally through an interior chimney, B, said tube carrying at its lower end an Argaud burner, A, and means for supporting the chimney B. The gas-tube A is closed at the lower end, below the burner, and provided with a screw-nut, a, which supports a second exterior chimney, O, of somewhat larger diameter than the inner chimney, B. The lower part of the chimney is closed, being preferably of hemispherical shape, through a central opening of which the gas-tube A passes to the outside. The gas-tube A is enlarged near the upper part of the inner chimney into a ball or otherwise shaped portion, A to the shape of which the inner and outer chimneys, B and (l, are made to correspond, by concentricallybulged portions 1) and d, as shown in the drawing. A sheet-metal collar, D, connects the upper end of the outer chimney with the inner chimney, said collar being slotted or perforated to admit the air into the space between the inner and outer chimneys. This space forms a flue of uniform size from the top to the bottom of the interior chimney, whereby the draft is improved. The collar D may be arranged with a sliding ring having corresponding holes or slots for the purpose of regulating the supply of air to the lamp. The air is drawn down to the burner through the slotted collar D into the space between the inner and outer chimneys, and is heated by contact with the surfaces of the same to a high temperature before it is finally conducted to the lower part of'the burner and the flame. The gas is simultaneously heated up in its passage through the tube A and ball A so as to be conducted at a high temperature to the burner. I
The spherical expansion of the gas-tube and the corresponding bulges of the chimneys have the advantage that the upwardly-moving gases of combustion are more fully utilized for heating the gas and the air.
The form of the lamp has the advantage that it can be hung to the end of a gas-tube, and that the supporting foot orstand vertically below the burner can be dispensed with. The
lamp can thus be conveniently arranged on a stand, bracket, or chandelier.
In connection with the lamp, a properly-eonstructed gas globe or shade may be used.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, in a gas-lamp, of a central gas-tube, supporting a burner near its lower end and having a spherical bulb above the burner, with a chimney having a bulge concentric to the bulb of the gas-tube, substantially as set forth.
2. In a gas-lamp, the'combination of a central gas-conducting tube, having a burner near its lower end, with an interior chimney and with an exterior chimney, closed at the lower end and secured below.the burner, the central gas-tube having a bull) or expansion and the chimneys corresponding bulges concentric to the bulb, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a gas-lamp, of a central gas-tube and an interior chimney with an exterior chimney which is closed at the lower end and secured to the lower end of the gastube and to the upper end of the interior chimney, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 24th day of May, 1881.
HEINRIO H W. FABIAN.
