The invention relates to match igniting devices used for igniting burners and fires in furnaces, and has for its object to provide a device of this kind which may be inserted through a furnace opening with its end adjacent a burner, and the match ignited at the burner, thereby obviating the present practice of attaching a match to an elongated member, igniting the same, and inserting the same in the furnace.
A further object is to provide a match igniting device comprising an elongated shaft having a match carrying weight slidably mounted thereon, and a, scratcher plate on the shaft adjacent its outer end in the path of the head of the match, and adapted to strike or ignite the match when the weight is released from adjacent the inner end of the shaft and allowed to slide downwardly towards the outer end of the shaft.
A further object is to tiltably and yieldably mount the striker plate on the outer end of the shaft so the head of the match can slide outwardly on the striker plate for the striking operation.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.

Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the igniting device.
Figure 2 is a view in elevation of the outer end of the igniter, showing the striking operation.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the striker plate, and its mounting.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral l designates an elongated shaft or rod, which may be of any length desired. As the device is particularly adapted for use in connection with, what is known, as floor furnaces, where the burners are a considerable distance from an igniting hole in the furnace wall, the shaft is relatively long.
The inner end of the shaft I, is provided with a handle 2, and slidably mounted on the shaft l is a weight 3, which weight is provided with a match stem receiving aperture 4, in its outer end, for frictionally receiving and holding one end of a match stem 5, with the head of the match 6 outwardly disposed. It will be noted that the holding aperture 4 is relatively close to the axis of the shaft 1, the purpose of which will presently appear.
The outer end of the shaft l is preferably bent as at '5, after a flanged sleeve 8 has been placed on the shaft, and after the spring 9 and striker plate 10 have also been placed on the shaft. Striker plate I is preferably round as shown, and is of greater diameter than the diameter of the weight 3, hence it will be seen that when the weight 3 is released from adjacent the handle member 2, the head 6 of the match will engage the abrading surface H of the striker plate, and as the striker plate is loosely and rockably mounted at l2, on the shaft I, there will be a movement of the match head 6 radially and outwardly over the abrading surface ll, thereby igniting the match, which in turn ignites the burner.
By providing the spring 9 the striker plate it is not only rockably mounted for movement in any position, but is also yieldably supported for facilitating the striking operation.
From the above it will be seen that an igniting device is provided, which is particularly adapted for igniting burners in furnaces or any place not easy of access, and that the striking of the match takes place at the burner, rather than outside the furnace. In devices, now used, where a match is attached to the end of a rod, ignited and passed through an access opening in the furnace, the matches are usually put out by a draft through the access opening, hence requires several attempts before a burner can be ignited. It will also be seen that the device is gravity actuated and can be cheaply manufactured and sold.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is:
l. A match igniting device comprising an elongated shaft, a match carrying weight slidably mounted on the shaft, one end of said shaft having a striker plate in the path of the head of a match carried by the weight, said striker plate being provided with a central aperture greater than the diameter of the shaft, said striker plate being yieldably supported by spring means carried by the shaft.
2. A match igniting device comprising an elongated shaft, a match carrying weight slidably mounted on the shaft, one end of said shaft having a striker plate in the path of the head of a match carried by the weight, said striker plate being rockably and yieldably mounted on the shaft, said mounting comprising an enlarged aperture through the striker plate and a coiled spring surrounding the shaft and engaging the outer side of the striker plate.
