Description

L. E. JONES.
(N0 Model.)
HAMB- Patented. Dec. 13,1881.
N. Pnzns Pmwmno m Wuhinglnn. o. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LLEWELLYN E. JONES, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,923, dated December 13, 1881.
Application filed November 14, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, L. E. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hames, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain details of construction in the class of hames known in the market as irou-boundhames, which improvements I will now proceed to describe, having reference to the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 shows side elevations of the top and bottom sections of a hame embracing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the bottom irons, and Fig. 3 is a like view of a modification thereof.
Like letters of reference indicate identical parts in all the figures.
Arepresents awoodeu hame. B is the front, and B theback iron. Gis themetal top piece, and D the bottom piece. Both top and bottom pieces are pro vided wi th one or two tan gs or shanks, preferably two. They are also formed with shoulders or flanges a to receive the front and back irons, so that the latter, when applied to the hame, will lie flush with the thicker portions of the top and bottom pieces.
(Nd model.)
The wooden hame is recessed or mortised, as shown, to receive the tangs or shanks of the top and bottom irons, and thus forms a smooth and even surface for the front and back irons. The front and back irons and top and bottom pieces are secured to the wooden hame by means of rivets or bolts passed through suitable holes or perforations in the metal portions.
I sometimes form the bottom iron with a solid eye, or with a loop for the heme-straps, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
I am aware that it is not new, broadly, to construct a haine with front and back irons and metal top and bottom pieces, and such I do not claim, broadly but,
Having fully described my improvement, what I claim as new is A wooden hame, recessed or niortised at the top and bottom, and provided with the shouldered or recessed metallic top and bottom pieces having the front and back irons fitted thereto, and all the parts united together, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified. 1
LLE WELLYN E. JONES.
