The arrangement of checkers according to the present. invention embodies a plurality of. checkers indicated by the,1etters H.-HandL-+L. Said checkers may be identical in contour and each may be an elongated rectangular.parallelopiped.
:Each of the checkerslisprovidedwithaplur lity :of ,holes MM,-ea;ch checkenin the illustrated embodiment of the inventionhavi-ng three-holes symmetrical-1y disposed .with respect to the corresponding checker. The three holesin each checker have their axesy'in 'co-plana-r relationship.
As shown in 'Fig-ure 1, the checkers :I-I-eI-Lare disposed "in herringbone arrangement @with the checkers L:L. Expressed in otherrlanguageithe checkers H-I-I are arrangedinecheloniwithsirerspecttoone another in parallel files and the checkers LL "are arrangedin echelon with respect to one another in parallel-files, the long dimensions of the checkerstH-H=being ,atright angles to the long dimensions of the checkers LL. As viewed in plan, a shortdimension of each checker H is in abutting relationship with the long dimension of a checkerpL. Likewise, a
shorts-dimension of a checkerLas viewedrin-- plan is in abutting relationship with the long dimension of a checker H. As illustrated" in the drawing, the hole each :end portion ore-each -"checker .abutted by aqshort end surface -;of- :a neighboring checker has its axis;in-.:co -p1a.narxre- '2 lationship with the axes .of thelholes-inysald neighboring checker.
As shown in Figure 2, thecheckersL-Lare disposed at different levels from the checkers, breaking joint with said checkers H-H, thereby avoiding continuous horizontal 'joint planesalong which the checkers can-shift. Otherwise-expressed, the checkers LL in one layer are displaced vertically from the checkers 'H-H in flhexnext adjacent layer a distance 'less'than the'height of a checker L or H; As "shown-in Eigure 2, the, checkersTr-L are-shown symmetrically disposed with respect itothe planes which mark the contactsbetween adjacent layers of the checkers iIt will gloev noted that theholes MM are in alignment from top to bottom of the clhecker arrangement, thereby providing continuousflues for the passage of gas or air.
Though a preferred embodiment, of "the present invention has-been described-in detail' many modifications will occurto those skilled in the art. 'It is intended to cover all such modifications that i all within the scope of theappended-claims.

In combination, a plurality of checkers of similar contour, each comprising a rectangular parallelopiped, said checkers being arranged in two groups, the checkers in one of said groups being arranged in parallel files, the checkers in each of said files being arranged in echelon with respect to each other, the checkers in the other of said groups being also arranged in parallel files, the checkers thereof being arranged in echelon with each other, the end surfaces of the checkers in each of said groups abutting the sides of the checkers in the other of said groups, the checkers in said groups being displaced vertically from the checkers in the other of said groups a distance less than the height of a checker each of said checkers having an elongated rectangular cross-sectional contour in a plane parallel with said layers and being provided with a plurality of holes disposed transversely thereof, the end holes of each checker abutted by an end surface of a neighboring checker, having their axes in co-planar relationship with the axes Of the holes in said neighboring checker, said checkers being arranged in layers, the holes in the checkers in each layer being in registry with the holes in the checkers in adjacent layers.

In combination, a plurality of checkers of similar contour, each comprising a rectangular parallelopiped, said checkers being arranged in two groups, the checkers in one of said groups being arranged in parallel files, the checkers in each of said files being arranged in echelon with respect to each other, the checkers in the other of said groups being also arranged in parallel files, the checkers thereof being arranged in echelon with each other, the end surfaces of the checkers in each of said groups abutting the sides of the checkers in the other of said groups, the checkers in one of said groups being displaced vertically from the checkers in the other of said groups a distance approximately equal to half the height of a checker each of said checkers having an elongated rectangular cross-sectional contour in a plane parallel with said layers and being provided with a plurality of holes disposed transversely thereof, the end holes of each cihecker abutted by an end surface of a neighboring checker, having their axes in co-planar relationship with the axes of the holes in said neighboring checker, said checkers being arranged in layers, the holes in the checkers in each layer being in registry with the holes in the checkers in adjacent layers.

In combination, a plurality of checkers of similar contour, each comprising a rectangular parallelopiped, the checkers in one of said groups being arranged in parallel files, the individual checkers being arranged in echelon, the checkers in the other of said groups being arranged in parallel files, the individual checkers thereof being arranged in echelon, the checkers in one of said groups being disposed in herringbone a1- rangement with the checkers in the other of said groups each of said checkers being provided with a plurality of holes disposed transversely thereof, the end holes of each checker abutted by an end surface of a neighboring checker, having their axes in co-planar relationship with the axes oi. the holes in said neighboring checker, said checkers being arranged in layers, the holes in the checkers in each layer being in registry with the holes in the checkers in adjacent layers.
7. In combination, a-plurality of checkers of similar contour, each comprising a rectangular parallelopiped, the checkers in one of said groups being arranged in parallel files, the individual checkers being arranged in echelon, the checkers in the other of said groups being arranged in parallel files, the individual checkers thereof being arranged in echelon, the checkers in one of said groups being disposed in herringbone arrangement with the checkers in the other of said groups, the checkers in said groups being displaced vertically a distance less than the height of a checker each of said checkers being provided with a plurality of holes disposed transversely thereof, the end holes of each checker abutted by an end surface of a neighboring checker, having their axes in co-planar relationship with the axes of the holes in said neighboring checker, said checkers being arranged in layers, the holes in the checkers in each layer being in registry with the holes in the checkers in adjacent layers.

In combination, a plurality of checkers of similar contour, each comprising a rectangular parallelopiped, the checkers in one of said groups being arranged in parallel files, the individual checkers being arranged in echelon, the checkers in the other of said groups being arranged in parallel files, the individual checkers thereof being arranged in echelon, the checkers in one of said groups being disposed in herringbone arrangement with the checkers in the other of said groups, the checkers in said groups being displaced vertically a distance approximately equal to half the height of a checker each of said checkers being provided with a plurality of holes disposed transversely thereof, the end holes of each checker abutted by an end surface of a neighboring checker, having their axes in coplanar relationship with the axes of the holes in said neighboring checker, said checkers being arranged in layers, the holes in the checkers in each layer being in registry with the holes in the checkers in adjacent layers.
