13 claims. (o1. 244-148) This invention relates to packages and particularly to an aerial delivery release package including a container from which a parachute may be released. Among the objects of the invention is to provide a container or parachute-enclosing casing which may be made from light materials and easily assembled with a parachute and :a static cord and which will contain the parachute and static cord in such a manner as to facilitate the withdrawal of the static cord without interference from the contents of the package, and provide for the ready release of the parachut from the container.

Another object of the invention is to provide a parachute-containing package which will easily open and release the contents of the package at the proper time during use.

1t is important that the casing or enveloping portion of a parachute package be relatively light and at the same time be sufficiently strong to withstand transportation and protect the contents in their original folded condition. The con'- tainer of the present invention is particularly suited for containing a parachute by which pigeons can be landed. 'Ihe container encloses a static cord which is tied to the package and is adapted to be anchored at one end when the package is thrown overboard from an aircraft.

vThe package is provided with an opening for the protrusion or accessibility of the shrouds of an enclosed parachute whereby a load may be attached to the shrouds or to connecting members attached to the shrouds. The package is so constituted as to immediately open and release the parachute when the fall of the package is arrested and the effect of the falling load is exerted on the package. A load constituting a cage containing pigeons can be released from the package without excessive jolting or injury to the pigeons. Any container attached to a static cord would be abruptly arrested in its fall, but the package of the present invention is so designed that when the fall of the container is arrested the load will open the container and draw the parachute therefrom with a minimum amount of transference of shock to the pigeons constituting part of the load. The static line thereafter becomes effective to open the canopy of the parachute. While the enveloping material or casing of the package is made relatively light, and preferably from folded paper, it is so constituted as to retain its form and protect the enclosed parachute and at the same time afford means for quickly releasing the parachute. The attainment of these results constitutes objects ofthe invention and otherobjects will be set forth in the accompanying specifica- 'tion and claims and shown in the drawings.

The drawings illustrate the principle of our invention and the best mode in which we contemplate applying the same.

The containeror casing of the package has four double side walls running longitudinally of the package and two end walls for closing the ends of the package. The end walls are of a single thickness and each end wall is provided with a pair of flaps which are tucked into the package when it is nally closed. The entire casing is formed from a single blank of paper and is die-cut. While the shape of the package may vary, as desired, the blank of paper may be cut as illustrated in Fig. 1, making allowance, however, for turned-over edges which are sewed or otherwise fastened by adhesive to the portions of the blank which' they contact. These turnedover edges serve to stiffen the edges of the blank and are desirable, though not indispensable, when paper of relatively light weight is employed. A paper of the grade of manila paper has been found suitable. If heavier paper'is employed, the turned-over edges may be dispensed with.

The package as thus far described is complete and ready for use. However, before shipment from the factory, the package is enclosed in a moisture-proof foil 13, Fig. 11. Preferably, aluminum foil is employed for this purpose. The package is wrapped between two sheets of foil which are sealed at their edges Tl after air yhas been evacuated from the package. edges i8 are folded over, as shown at 19, and the vacuum-wrapped package is ready for insertion in a carton 83, Fig. 12. This carton has the usual overlapping aps at one end and an opening cord 8| by which an edge 82 of the carton can be easily severed, as illustrated in Fig. 13, when access to the wrapped parachute package is desired.

For using, the package is taken from its container and the enveloping foil is removed. The load is attached to the loops B3 of the shrouds which extend from within the package. The end 65 of the static cord 45 is attached to an anchor on an aircraft. T he operator supports the package and its load by grasping the package and the shrouds, or shroud button 84, with the load dangling from the shrouds. The package and load are thrown overboard and as they fall the static cord is withdrawn from the package, except for the portion which has been attached thereto. When the full length of the available loose cord has been withdrawn, the fall of the container is interrupted, with the result that the inertia of the load pulls on the shrouds and causes severing of the tearable strip of material 48 along its weakened line and the opening of the container. The end wall lll, which normally is held in place by the frictional engagement of the flaps I8 and I3 between the inner and outer front walls, gives way and the parachute is fully released from al1 restraint from the container simultaneously with the opening of the container along the line of tear. When the parachute is free, the static cord will cause the parachute to open and the pull of the parachute upon opening will break the static cord at its weakened section 58. While the package may be made in different sizes to accommodate parachutes of various designs for alighting loads of a variety of forms, for the purpose of the present disclosure we have selected a pigeon carrier 85 as representing a load attached to the parachute.

It is to be understood that changes and modiiications in construction, form and relative arrangement of parts, which will now appear to those skilled in the art, may be made within the scope of the invention. Reference is, therefore, to be had to the appended claims for a definition of the limits of the invention.

What is claimed is:

1. A package comprising a container and a folded parachute therein, including a canopy with attached shrouds, said container having a line of scoring longitudinally of one of its walls with an opening through the container which is intersected by said lin'e of scoring and providing for the passage of shrouds from the enclosed canopy whereby said wall may be opened along .the scored line and the parachute released from the package by a pull on the exposed shrouds. k

A package comprising a container and a folded parachute therein, including a canopy with 'attached shrouds, said container having a lin'e of scoring in one wall of the package and an opening intersected by said line of scoring and providing for the passage of shrouds from the enclosed canopy to the exterior of said container, and a static cord attached to said parachute and partially contained in said container with an Aintermediate portion thereof secured to said container, said partially contained portion of the cord being withdrawable from said container without disturbing the contained parachute, and 'the withdrawal of the parachute being attainable by the severance of said line of scoring by a pull on the exposed shrouds.

4. A package of the character described, in-

cluding a folded parachute comprising a canopy with attached shrouds, said package providinga compartmentfor containing said folded canopy 'and shrouds and having an opening in a wall for the protrusion of the shrouds from the package and a weakened line in said Wall extending from said opening, a static cord, a second compartment in said package separate from said first-named compartment for containing the Vmajor .portion of said static cord and isolating the same from said parachute and having an opening at one of its ends for the passage of said static cord and means for attaching an intermediate portion of said static cord to 4a wall of said package.

A package of the character described, comprising a substantially rectangular container having a displaceable end wall retentively secured by said container and a side wall with a weakened portion and an opening, means on said container `for fastening a Suspension cord, and a folded jprising a single blank of paper cut to provide four double side walls when foldedand end-wall portions for forming end walls with aps extudinally of the side walls and adapted for fastenfolded portions folded towards each other from opposite directions and thereby providing separable, closely-adjacent, oppositely-facing, folded edges in said last-named double side Wall for gaining access to the interior of said package, each of said folded portions comprising a paper portion folded back against itself with the fold line disposed to constitute one of the aforesaid separable, folded edges, releasable means securing said two folded portions together, said rel'easable means being connected to said two folded portions along said separable Vfolded edges :and

A package comprising a container and a folded parachute therein, including a canopy having a hem and having line means attached to the hem of the canopy, said container having side Wall structure with provision for said line means to extend out to the exterior of the container at the end of the side wall structure, said container having a releasable end closure and including structure separable by said line means upon pulling thereon for opening said container and for releasing said end closure, said separable structure including sheet material forming part of the side wall structure, said sheet material having weakened localities providing ready rupturing of the same along a line extending throughout the length of the side wall structure, whereby said sheet material may be opened along said line by pulling on the line means, said line means being connected to draw the parachute out of the package when the aforesaid separable structure is opened.

A package comprising a container having a displaceable end structure, side wall structure including a Wall part having la weakened portion extending lengthwise thereof, said container including structure providing an opening from the interior to the exterior at an end of the side wall structure, a suspension cord extending into the container, said container including means attaching an intermediate portion of said suspension cord thereto, a folded parachute enclosed in said container and having means attached thereto and projecting through said opening whereby a load may be attached to the parachute without opening said container, said parachute comprising a canopy having a hem, and said suspension cord being secured at its end to the hem of the canopy and having a Weak portion intermediate its said end and its aforesaid attachment to the container.
