MOUNTING OF GRAMOPHONE UNITS AND THE LIKE Filed Dec. 5, 1946 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented May 16, 1950 MOUNTING OF GRAMOPHONE UNITS AND THE LIKE Edmund Walter Mortimer, Swindon, England, as-
signor to The Garrard Engineering &
Manufacturing Company Limited, Swindon, England Application December 5, 1946, Serial No. 714,270 In Great Britain January 30, 1946 4 Claims. (Cl. 248-48) This invention relates to the mounting of gramophone and like units such as a comprisin a plate carrying a motor, record changing means, pick-up or tone arm and the like from a supporting board in a resilient mannerwhereby vibrations from the loud speaker or other source are damped or eliminated.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved and simplified mounting means by which the levelling of the unit may readily be effected.
According to the invention the mounting means comprises a helical or coiled tension spring which is rigidly secured at one end to the supporting board with its axis vertical, the other end of the spring being adjustably connected. to a bolt secured to the unit plate and extending through the spring.
The spring is preferably of tapered form, the larger end being connected to an apertured i'astening plate adapted to be secured to the supporting board.
In the accompanyin drawings- Figure 1 is an elevation of a mounting device according to the invention shown in association with a unit plate and supporting board,
Figure 2 is a plan,
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation, and
Figure 4 is a diagram of a gramophone unit plate and supporting board indicating the positions of the mounting devices.
In carrying the invention into effect according to one convenient mode by way of. example, an anchoring plate I is provided which may be of diamond, oval or other form having holes 2 at its ends for securing it to the supporting board 3. This plate is provided with a centrally disposed aperture 5 of round or other suitable shape.
Oppositely disposed tongues 5 are cut out of the plate I adjacent the perimeter of the aperture 4 and are bent to form eyes below the plate into which the end coil of a sprin Ii is threaded.
On a diameter at right angles two more tongues I are cut and bent downwardly to form abutments with which the spring engages to .centralise it with the aperture 4 in the plate.
The coil spring 6 is preferably downwardly tapered and at the lower end the coil is turned in to form an eye 8 lying axially of the spring.
This eye is adapted to receive a bolt 9 which extends through the spring and is s'ecured to the spring by nuts In, H lying onf' either side of the eye, a washer l2 being providg'd for the exterior nut. By a suitable adjustment of the nuts 2 N, H an axial adjusting displacement of the bolt 9 and spring 6 may be made.
In mounting or suspending a gramophone unit indicated by the unit plate l3 upon a supporting board 3, four of the suspension devices as above described are provided, secured on lines at right angles to one another (see Figure 4) so that they extend downwardly through holes II in the board 3, being secured to the board by the anchoring plates l. The bolts 9 at their upper ends are secured to the unit plate l3 extending through holes I! therein and being provided with a head [5 and locking nut I 6 for this purpose. In applying the devices the outer nuts II are removed from the bolts and the latter removed from the springs 6. The nuts in and it are removed and the bolts secured to the unit plate in appropriate positions being locked in position by the nuts IS. The inner nuts III are then screwed on to the bolts and the unit l3 positioned so that the nuts I seat on eyes 8 of the springs. Levelling of the unit plate l3 may then be effected by suitably adjusting one or more of the inner nuts l0 whereupon the outer nuts II are applied so that bolts 9 are rigidly secured to the springs 6, thus providing a resilient anti-vibration mounting for the gramophone unit. Any other suitable number of the suspension devices instead of four may be, employed.
When the supporting element 3 is formed of Y tially vertical by the securing means, and abutted interiorly thereof at its upper end for centralizing the same within the aperture of the supporting board by the aligning means, the lowermost coil of said spring being formed as an eye, a bolt secured at its upper end to the unit, extending through the aperture ofthe supporting board and spring and adjustably secured at its lower end to the eye of the spring.
2. Means for resiliently mounting a gramophone or like unit comprising a supporting board, an apertured anchoring plate carried on the supporting board, a pair of opposing integral tongues extending inwardly of the anchoring plate aperture, and forming eyes, a downwardly tapering coil tension spring threaded at a coil in the upper end thereof into the eyes formed by the tongues of the anchoring plate, a further pair of opposing integral tongues extending inwardly of the aperture of said anchoring plate in angular relation with respect to the first pair of tongues aforesaid disposed in abutting engagement with the interior of said coil spring at its upper end for centralizing the spring within the aperture, a bolt secured at its upper end of the unit, extending through the supporting board and spring, and secured at its lower end'to "a coil at the reduced lower end of the spring.
3. Means for resiliently mounting a gramophone or like unit in accordance with claim 1' wherein the mounting spring at its upper end is secured to an anchoring plate carried on the supporting board, said anchoring plate being apertured for the passage of the bolt, and wherein the anchoring plate is provided with at least onelintegral tongue which forms an eye extending inwardly of the aperture thereof and into which eye a coil at the upper end of the tension spring is threaded and wherein said anchoring plate is provided with atleast .a second integral cut out tongue extending inwardly of the aper ture thereof for abutting engagement with the upper end of the tension spring for centralizing the spring within the aperture.
4. Means for resilientl mounting a gramophone or like unit in accordance with claim 1 wherein the mounting spring at its upper end is secured to an anchoring plate carried on the supporting board, said anchoring plate being apertured for the passage of the bolt, and wherein the anchoring plate is provided with a pair of opposing tongues which form eyes extending inwardly of the aperture thereof and into which eyes a coil at the upper end of the tension spring is threaded and wherein said anchoring plate is provided with a second pair of integral cut out tongues extending inwardly of the aperture thereof, in angular relation with respect to said first pair of tongues, for abutting engagement with the upper end of the spring for centralizing the spring 'within'the aperture.
