HORSE-BOOT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,771, dated December 13, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEFFERSON YOUNG, Jr., of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Horse-Boots, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a horse-boot designed to prevent and cure the habit commonly known as interference. Many boots have been designed for this purpose, but as hitherto made they have been open to one or another of the various objections that they turn upon the foot, that they would chafe the opposite leg or fetlock of the animal, and that when wet they lost shape and stiffness, and became practically useless.

The object of this invention is to produce an exceedingly light horse-boot for use in curing the habit commonly known as interference, the design being to produce a boot which being applied to one foot shall slightly touch the other when the two are brought too near each other, and to adapt this boot for successful use when subjected to moisture.

The invention consists in various details of construction, hereinafter described, consisting mainly in braiding the manila upon tarred marline, and covering the latter with leather or felt.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my boot; Fig. 2, a cross-section of the same.

A represents the manila or fibrous material; B, the tarred rope or marline upon which the same is braided; and G, the leather or felt arranged upon the inside of and covering the marline.

D represents the widened ends of theleather, and E buckles attached to one end of the leather, and engaging with the straps upon the opposite end of the same, whereby the boot may be fastened snugly around the leg or foot of the animal.

The manner in which the fiber is braided around the marline is clearly represented in the eross-section. It will be seen that the fibers radiate or stand outward around the exterior of the boot, and that they form a thick brush-like mass.

In use the boot will touch the opposite foot of the animal lightly, and with just suflicient force to cause the animal to separate his feet, the animal being in this manner trained to carry his feet in the proper position without the danger of having the foot ehafed or cut, or of having his gait destroyed by the application of excessive weight, as is the case with the leather boots.

The right to take a future patent covering the boot constructed of manila fiber is hereby reserved.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a horse-boot, the combination of the rope or marline, the fiber braided thereon, and attaching devices, substantially as described and shown.

2. The combination of the rope or marline, the fiber braided thereon, and a leather coverin g applied thereto, in the manner described and shown, and provided with fastening devlces.

3. The horse-boot consisting of the brushlike body, and the interiorv supporting-strip, having its ends widened in the manner described and shown, and provided with fasteningdevices.
