REINFORCED FRAGILE CONTAINER Filed 001;. 26, 1946 14 IN Mew 7- J M? r Pdfu/aag arm$w fg Patented May 16, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The invention relates to a fragile container, thereby characterized that the vessel is supplied with a protective covering, consisting firstly of a resilient adherent material completely enclosing the lateral walls of the container, and secondly of a wooden base-plate fixed to the bottom of the aforementioned container.
The annexed drawing is an example and a preferred embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevation, partly in section,
Fig. 2 is a ground plan.
The fragile container I, shown in the drawing, is supplied with the protective layer or covering 2, consisting of an adhering resilient material enclosing the lateral walls of the vessel, and with the Wooden round plate 3 fixed to the base 4.
The covering 2 may consist of a moulded mass, preferably made of granulated cork and a binder which does not become too stifi after congealing. The wooden plate 3 is fixed to the bottom of the container with glue in such manner that the rim of the plate is connected to the covering 2. At about its largest diameter the container 2 is further supplied with a hoop 6 for preventing damage to the container, and particularly the neck of the same, when the container is tumbled over.
The container is further supplied with a ring 1 to which are soldered two inner metal stirrups 8 situated inside the covering 2, the upper ends of which pass through the covering and are developed to the grips 9, for this purpose the hoop 5 is supplied with two openings Ill. The covering 2 is furthermore supplied with a cap ll made of resilient material for covering the top of the neck l2 of the container I. Between the bottom 4 of the container and the wooden baseplate 3, a strip of metal I3 is fitted with ends I that protrude over the rim of the base-plate and are supplied with the holes I5, for engaging a hook for emptying the container.
The wall of the container l is pierced by an aperture l6 which can be fitted with a tap. This aperture I6 is situated behind a slot I! made into the protective covering.
A metal ring I 8 encircles the protective covering 2 above the hoop B and is connected by two outer stirrups IS with a second metal ring 20, mounted round the wooden base-plate 3, each of the stirrups l9 having crosswise extending upper end 2|, said upper ends 2| engaging respectively, grips 9 to prop the latter and to prevent their withdrawal from within said protective layer 2.
The protective covering can be supplied on the outer surface with a white or coloured varnish affording protection against moisture and heat radiation to the container.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare what I claim is:
1. In a vessel made of fragile material having a bottom covered by a base plate and side walls and neck covered by a continuous resilient protective layer having an inner and outer surface, respectively; said base plate extending to said protective side wall layer and being adhesively connected to the latter, a first metallic hoop carried by said base plate, a second metallic hoop spaced from said first hoop and positioned within said protective layer, two oppositely arranged inner stirrups extending from said second hoop along the inner surface of said protective layer and terminating in two outer hand grips projecting from within said layer therethrough to the outer surface thereof, a third hoop positioned on said outer layer surface above and adjacent said grips, and outer stirrups extending along the outer surface of said protective layer between said first hoop and said third hoop, said outer stirrups including crosswise extending upper ends for engagement with said hand grips of said inner stirrups, respectively, to prop said hand grips.
2. In a vessel according to claim 1 wherein said base plate is provided with a recess, and a metal strip fitted in said recess and provided with perforated ends projecting beyond the circumference of said base plate for engaging a tool to facilitate tilting and emptying said vessel.
