SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,724, dated December 13,1881.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD GORMAN, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Appliances to Stoves andR-anges, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is the perspective view of the firebox of a stove with my improved appliance in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the said appliance by itself.

The object of my invention is to provide a removable diaphragm for the fire-box or tireplace of a stove or range, by means of which the space to be occupied by the fire may be contracted in dimensions, in order to use a smaller quantity of coal in the summer, or of wood, when starting a fire, at any time.

The material used in the construction of my diaphragm may be cast-iron but I prefer to employ a plate of wrought-iron made into the required form by properly cutting, bending, and punching the same.

In the drawings, A in Fig. 2 indicates my diaphragm. It has a broad flange at the top and a smaller flange at the bottom.

The width of this flange is sutlioient to cover the top of the firebrick lining on that side of the firebox and extend a short distance over the topcf the iron casing that surrounds the fire-brick and forms the fire-box of the stove or range.

a indicates a flange at the bottom of the diaphragm proper and at right angle thereto, the outer edge of which flange, when the diaphragm is in position in the fire-box, rests against the flre=brick on that side of the firebox, thus bracing the diaphragm proper and keeping it parallel to the side of the said brick,

this bottom flange being made of the right width for that purpose.

In Fig. 1, at d are two iron pins projecting above the before mentioned iron casing and forming part of the same, which pins, passing through the two holes 0 c, serve to hold the diaphragm in its place in the fire-box. These iron pins may be formed of cast-iron at the time of casting the said iron casing, or they may be pieces of wrought-iron rod fastcnedinto holes bored in the top of the iron casing.

While my diaphragm above described is of a shape that I consider most generally useful and applicable, I do not confine myself to that particular shape, as the forms of the fire-boxes ofsome stoves and ranges may necessitate modifications in the forms of the respective diaphragms. For example, when a fire-box is circular or oval, the outer edges of the abovedescribed flanges should be curved to correspond.

In Fig. 1,1) indicates the fire-box or fireplace of a stove or grate.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The diaphragm proper, a, with the lower flange, a, in combination with the upper flange, a, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.

2. The upper flange, a, with the holes 0 c, in connection with the pins 11 d, and in combination with the diaphragm proper, a, and the lower flange, a, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
