Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFTCE.
FELIX TYLEE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,068, dated August 9, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FELIX TYLEE, of the city of Cleveland, in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Beds; and I do hereby de- Clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of t-he same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment and combination of such devices as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will now describe its construction and operation.
In the drawings-Figure l is a perspective ofthe bed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the springs and slats, when properly adjusted to be placed upon the bed. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the bottom slat with the springs attached. Fig. Je is a perspective of the upper slat.
In Fig. l, represents the frame of the bed. (B, B) are slats which extend across and rest on bearings near the bottom of the bed. (a, (l) are blocks which are secured on the ends of slats (B, B). (0,) is a support which is also secured to slats (B, B) midway between blocks (a, (o.) Said support may be constructed in either of two ways, first-as represented in Fig. 2, with a hole extending to the slat (B,) or secondly as shown in Fig. 3, with a groove extending down its side. Either mode of construction will effect virtually the same end. (cl, (l) are two springs one end of each being pivoted or otherwise secured to the tops of blocks, (a, a.) The other end of said springs rest in a longitudinal groove on the top of support (C) (D) represents the upper slat as shown in Figs. l and 2. (f, f) are supports which are secured to slatv (D) in such a locality, that they will rest upon springs (d, d), near their centers. Said supports (f f,) are provided with grooves to enable them to rest firmly on springs (d, d.) Said grooves should be provided with strips of leather to prevent noise. (e) is a pin attached to the center of slat (D.) Said pin is for the purpose of entering the hole in support (C,) as shown in Fig. 2, in order to retain slat (D) in its desired position and give slat (D) a steady up and down motion. lhen the groove is used in place of the hole in support (C,) a pin is used in the side of slat (1),) as represented in Fig. 4.
The operation of my machine is as follows: Each part being constructed and properly adjusted as herein shown, the mattress is placed upon the slats (D, 1),) of which a sufficient number must be provided, to afford ample support. As the slat (D) receives the weight, it is communicated to springs (d (L) by means of supports f.) The slats (B, B,) having also a portion of the weight imparted to them, a double or compound spring is thus givento the mattress.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The central support (C), when the same shall be constructed substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth and described.
2. I claim the combination and arrangement of upper slat (D), pin (e), supports f), with central support (c), spring (fl (l), and blocks (a (L) when all shall be constructed and arranged in relation to each other as herein fully set forth and described.
FELIX TYLEE.
