Description

May 2, 1950 B. BAYUK TOBACCO HUMIDOR Filed July 26, 1946 IN V EN TOR.
ATTORNEYS control and substantially prevent the circulation of air between different drawers H, such as to cause loss or adulteration of aroma from the contents thereof, the drawers may be formed to have close fit within cabinet 10, and also cleats i2 may extend the full length of the interior of the cabinet to provide a baffle further restricting the circulation of air while serving as a stop for moisture compartment 20.
In accordance with the invention a moisture compartment 20 is provided in cabinet It adapted to contain a supply of moisture for humidifying the contents of drawers II. This compartment may be formed separately from cabinet ID, as illustrated in Fig. 4, and adapted for removable positioning therein to facilitate access thereto and replenishing the supply of moisture. As shown, the compartment 20 includes inner and outer walls 2| and 22, side walls 23 and a bottom 24 together defining a relatively flat chamber adapted to be filled with a quantity of moisture absorbent material 25 which will readily receive and retain a considerable supply of moisture, an example of satisfactory material being a felt of sufiicient resilience to prevent undue matting or wadding within the compartment. The walls of the compartment 20 are formed in such dimensions and proportions as to extend substantially from the bottom to the top of the cabinet In to provide the rear wall thereof. This compartment may be held firmly in position in a variety of ways permitting ready removal, for example by friction fit, which may be facilitated by grinding or otherwise roughing the contacting surfaces of compartment walls 23 and the inside of the cabinet, Or by forming these contacting walls surfaces with cooperating lugs or like projections and complementary receiving grooves as indicated at 26. With this construction, and with the parts formed of material of some resiliency as in the case of the above mentioned materials, the compartment 20 may readily be snapped out of place for rewetting of the backing therein and then snapped back into place as shown.
The invention also provides for the free transmission of moisture from compartment 20 to the contents of each of drawers II individually and separately without permitting direct communication or circulation of air between the drawers themselves. Each of drawers H is provided at its inner end with an opening for receiving moisture from the moisture compartment. As shown, this opening is provided by terminating the rear wall 30 of each drawer short of the side walls of the drawer, thus leaving openings 3| between each drawer, and the bottom of the next higher drawer or, in the case of the uppermost drawer, the top of the cabinet. The inner wall 2| of compartment 20 is provided with laterally extending slots 32 adapted to register with the openings 3|. In the case of the top drawer, the opening from compartment 20 is shown as provided by terminating the inner wall 2| of the moisture compartment short of the top of the cabinet, leaving an opening 33 for moisture as shown.
This construction provides for ready transmission of moisture from the packing 25 in compartment 20 separately to the interior of each of the drawers I I, but since the drawers abut the inner wall 2| when closed, as shown in Fig. 3, direct communication from drawer to drawer is prevented. Also, with compartment 20 well filled with the absorbent packing 25, there is no appreciable tendency for the aroma of the contents of any one drawer to be transmitted by way of the compartment 20 to the contents of any other drawers, and the removable construction of this compartment facilitates ready changing of packing 25 to prevent contamination of the tobacco by over long use of the same packing.
The invention thus provides a humidor wherein a variety of different tobacco and tobacco products may be stored in a properly humidified atmosphere without impairing their characteristic aromas. This humidor contains multiple storage compartments and affords ready access to each without disturbing the contents of the others. It is simple in construction but of decorative appearance, and in addition it is adapted for ready production in large quantities from easily fabricated materials and hence at low unit cost. Moreover, its structural and operational principles are such that it may be formed in varied sizes, capacities, and shapes without sacrificing its other advantages.
While the form of apparatus herein described constitutes a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to this precise form of apparatus, and that changes may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention which is defined in the appended claims.
