GIBBONS FRAME, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SEWING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,518, dated December 6, 1881,
Application filed February .16, 1880.
To all whom it may concern.
. Be it known that I, GmBoNs FRAME, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machines, which improvernent is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of the portion of a sewingmachine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section-thereof in line as a", Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a view of the end opposite to that shown in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
. My invention consists of the shaft which carries the hook or looper passed loosely through the power or driving wheel of the machine, and connected to said wheel by an adjustingdisk, whereby said hook or looper and the needle may be timed simply by moving or setting the shaft, the other parts of the machine being in no wise disturbed, said disk and wheel being arranged concentrically with respect to the aforesaid shaft, both thus being on the same shaft, with the disk within the rim of the said driving-wheel, as part of the latter.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the shaft, to which is connected the hook or looper A, as is well known in the class of sewingmachines of the order known as Willcox 85 Gibbs.
B represents the power or driving wheel, to which is secured, or with which is cast, the cocentric O, which, by connected mechanism, operates the needle-bar, as is well known. The shaft A is passed loosely through the wheel B and eccentric O, and has fixed to it at the end adjacent to the wheel B a disk, D, which rests against the wheel in the depressed face thereof, and constitutes a part of said wheel,
I and is formed with a curved slot, a, whereby, by means of one or more screws, E, the disk D, and consequently the shaft A, are connected to said wheel B, the screw or screws E passingthrough the slot a,and being fitted to thebody of the wheel; or the slot may be formed in the wheel B, and the screws fitted to the disk.
When the hook or looper and needle are to be set relatively to each other or timed, the screws E are loosened and the disk D is rotated either to the right or left, as is requisite, in which motion the firmly-connected shaft A is likewise rotated, and vthe hook or looper is thereby thrown back or set forward the required extent relatively to the needle. When the adjustment is accomplished the screws E are tightened, and their heads firmly connect the disk D and shaft A as one, after which the machine may be run as usual.
It will be seen that the aforesaid timing adjustment or setting operations areaccomplished simply by moving the shaft A, without altering the position of the other parts of the machine, as the wheel B and the connected eccentric O are not disturbed.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The looper-carrying shaft A, in combination with the fixed disk D, having a curved slot, a, the driving-wheel B, loosely fitted to said shaft, and provided with the eccentric (l, and the screws E E, said disk and wheel being arranged concentrically upon the shaft A, with the disk within the rim of the driving-wheel as a part of the latter, substantially as and for the purposeset forth.
