Description

J. RUE.
Cultivator.
No. 25,048. Patented Aug. 9,1859.
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES RE, OF ENGLISHTOWN, NEW JERSEY.
IM PROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specifieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 25,648, dated August 9, 1859.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES RUE, of Englishtown, in the county ot' Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Oultivatorp; and l do hereby deelare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being,r had to the accompanying dra\vings,forming apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longiiudinal Vertical section of a cultivator constructed according' to my improvements. Fig'. 2 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters in both views rel'er to corresponding parts.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation,
The plowshares A are attached to two separate beams, B, which diverge from each other, forming an angle of about thirty degrees, as clearly represented in Fig'. 2, and the shares are seeured to the beams by means of screW- b'oltsa, and the shares join the beams by means of flanges Z), so that the same have a good and firm hold.
Firmly seeured to the beams B are the standards O 0/, which are united by cross-beams D D', and these cross-beams are thereby elevated sufficiently, so as to pass over the growing crops. Attached to the cross-beams D D' are the handles E, which unite the two bars, and the position of the forward standards, O, is strengthened by braces F.
The draftpole G is connected with the beams B by means of rods af, which are hinged to the ends of the beams by means of hooks and eyes b', and these rods connect with the draftpole by means of a bolt, o, which passes through loops c' in the upper ends of the rods, and through a staple, d, which is secnred to the draft-pole, so as to raise the bolt c a certain distance above the draft-pole, and the staple d is provided with several holes, d', whereby the height of the draft-pole can be accommodated to different draft-animals. The rear end of the draft-pole rests on the cross-bar D, between two guide-rods, H, between which it is confined .bya staple, f, leaving the same, however, a certain amount of play up and down, and a pin, g, serves to secure the rear end ot' the pole to the guide-rods H, if the cultivator is to be drawn l'rom place to place.
The drat't-anima-ls are hitched to a bolt, h, which is secured to the under` side ot' the draftpole, and which, consequently, is situated a certain distance below the bolt c, which connects the pole with the hing'ed rods a', and this bolt is secured to the pole by means of a plate, which is rigidly attaehed to a protuberance, j, at the under side of the pole.
The operation is as follows: The draft-animals are hitched to the bolt lt, and the front end of the pole is secured to a cross-bar resting on the necks of the animals, and as long' as the rear end ot' the pole is contined to the guide-rods H by the pin g the front ends of the shares will be raised from the ground and the cultivator' can be drawn from place to place. In order to work with the same the pin g is withdrawn, and the strain exerted by the animals on the bolt h has a tendency to depress the rear end of the pole, and a pressure will therei'ore be exerted on the top of the beam D, whereby the shares are forced a certain distance into the ground, and this depth can be regulated by raising or lowering the bolt c, which connects the hinged rods a' with the draft-pole, and its depth can be further increased by raising' the back end of the cultivator, so that the driver by raising the handles can accommodate the depth to which the shares are to cut to the inequalities of the ground. By these means this cultivator is adapted to different sorts of work, such as hillin'g` corn or cotton, or for hilling or weeding root crops.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the loose draft-pole G, bracket f, cultivator-frame B H, hinged rods a b', devices tj IL, bracket d, and pin c, all arranged and Operating substantially in the manner and for the`purposes herein described.
