Description
0. COLLINS.
0001 0R CRATE.
(Model.)
Patented Nov. 29,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLMSTEAD COLLINS, OF RIOHIVOOD, KENTUCKY.
COOP OR CRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,205, dated November 29, 1881.
Application filed June 29, 1881.
.To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that I, OLM-STEAD COLLINS, of Richwood, Boone county, Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ooops or Crates, of which the following is a specitication.
My invention relates to a construction of open-work crate or coop capable of being'folded into compact dimensions for storage or transportation.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a coop or crate embodying my invention, the same being shown in its expanded condition. Fig. 2 shows the same coop in its folded condition. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the door or entranceway. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of my stretcher or but- Y ton, together with associated members.
The external walls of my coop are composed wholly of two sets of intersecting quadrangular frames, A A', preferably of iron. Each set is united to the other at the intersections by pivots a, and the two frames are connected together by rods or bars B, so as to constitute a sort of box of open lattice-work that is capable of being opened out into the condition shown in Fig. l, or of being folded into the condition shown in Fig. 2.
For the purpose of an entrance-door I provide two bent rods, C C', whose ends are pivoted, as at 0, on two of the intersecting rivets. Orilices c' in these rods receiving pins D, that pass through them and through similar holes, a', in the frame, enable these rods to be fastened in a position that operates to shut in the chickens, or other contents of the coop or crate.
At two vertically-oppositeintersections, near the middle of the coop, there are two vertical posts, F F', which, being riveted in the appropriate lower intersections, extend upward and through the top of the coop, where their pro- (Model.)
jectin g ends occupy the orifices hin a stretcher or turn-button, H, which being pivoted (h') at the middle of the top of the coop, is capable of being moved onto or oft' of the said posts.
Accidental escape of the ends of the turnbutton from the post ends may be prevented by pins J inserted in holes in said ends. When engaged over said post ends the button H effectually prevents any collapse or change of form of the coop.
Vhile preferring wrought-iron as the material of my coop, Ireserve the option of making it in whole or part of wood.
Au obvious elaboration of my device may consist in the interposition of one or more additional lattice floors parallel to and between the top and bottom lattices shown.
Having thus described myinvention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A coop or crate consisting of intersecting lattice-work A A' a and rods or bars B, capable of being expanded or of being folded into com pact dimensions, substantially as set forth.
2. A coop or crate consisting of the pivoted posts F F', intersecting lattice work A A' a, and rods or bars B, as set forth.
3. In a folding lattice-work coop, A A' a B, the perforated stretcher or turn-button H hh', adapted to be engaged over the posts F F', substantially as set forth.
4. In a folding lattice-work coop, A A' a B,
OLM STEAD COLLINS.
Attest GEO. H. KNIGHT, SAML. S. CARPENTER.
