1 Claim. (01. -308) This invention relates to furniture, and more specifically to a combination crib and chest of drawers. 1
One object of my invention is to form a crib and chest which can be used separately or in combination.
Another object is to form a combination crib and chest with a minimum number of extending legs to facilitate cleaning thereunder.
A third object is to form a combination in which the elements can be separated and used independently by disengaging them easily, two of the chest legs being lowered or unlatched to form what appears to be a conventional type of chest of drawers, and a footboard completing the crib in its separate form.
A further object is to form a crib and chest in which the folding legs of the chest are hidden and protected when the pieces are used in combination.
Another object is to form a crib and chest combination which is attractive, strong and serviceable whether used independently or in combination.
I accomplish these and other objects in the preferred form of my invention by forming my combination with crib and chest elements joined together by separable locking means, and using one pair of legs attached to each element, and an extra pair of legs hidden in a recess under the chest capable of being lowered into functional position when it is desired to use the chest by itself.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure: I
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combination crib and chest according to one form of my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the headboard and rails of the combination shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view looking upward, showing the bottom and the rear of the chest of the combination shown in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the headboard and rails shown in Figure l and a footboard, illustrating the crib used as a separate piece of furniture.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of two similar removable legs for use with the chest 1 shown in Figure 1 when it is used separately.
Figure 6 is a perspective view looking upward, showing the bottom and rear of another form of my chest, wherein the bottom of the chest has two recesses and hinged legs capable of being 2 folded into and hidden withinthem; the illustration showing the legs in a half-folded position.
form of my chest, wherein two legsof the chest are hingeably attached thereto; the illustration showing the legs in half-folded position.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of a combination crib and chest, according to another form of my invention, showing a chest with drawers and a door.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of a combination crib and chest, according to still another form of my invention in which all the drawers open in the direction of the length 'of "the crib.
Figure 10 is a perspective view of a further modification of my combination showing a chest with two doors. Y
In the drawings and in the specifications in which like reference numbers designate, similar parts, in the form of my invention shown in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive,v the combination crib and chest I0 is comprised of a headboard l l, two rails l2, a chest 13 and side panels [4. The rails are secured to the headboard at one end l5 and have male interlocking means It at the other end. The chest has two slots I! in the rear and oppositely placed (see Figure 3), each slot being adapted bly with the male interlocking means It on one of the rails. The chest is also providedwith two openings it (see Figure 3) and two legs I!) (see Figure 5), each having a portion 20 capable of fitting into the opening 18, leaving another portion 2| protruding therefrom. Drawers 22 extend about half way through the chest and open from the side of the combination (see Figure 1), leaving the remainder of the chest space for compartments 23 shielded bya door 24 attached to the chest by hinging means 25.
When the crib and chest are used separately, a footboard 26 (see Figure 4), having slots similar to slots 11 inthe chest, is provided to form a separate crib unit 21.
In the modification of my invention shown in Figure 6, the chest 28 has two folding legs 29 attached to the chest by hinging means 30; the legs capable of being folded in the recesses 3! in the bottom of the chest.
In the modification of my invention shown in Figure 7, the chest 32 has two folding legs 33 attached to the chest by hinging means 34, the legs being capable of being folded along the bottom of the chest.
In the form of my invention shown in Figure 8, the chest 35 has drawers 36 and a hinged door 31 on the same side and at the foot of the combination, which is in other respects similar to the combination shown in Figure 1.
Figure 7 is a perspective view looking upward,
In another form of my invention shown in Figure 9, the chest 38 has drawers 39, all opening in the direction of the length of the crib, the combination being in other respects similar to the one shown in Figure 1.
In still another form of my invention shown in Figure 10, the chest 40 has two doors 4!, the combination being in other respects similar to the one shown in Figure 1.
When a mother or nurse is handling a child placed within the crib, she can control the child with the left arm, while with the right she can reach the small end drawers 22, and withdraw any nursing aids which are placed in these drawers.
When the combined service furniture is used on a motor drawn trailer, the dresser serves to weigh the crib and its contents against excessive shifting on the floor of the trailer when the same is driven over a road, and in this way the weight of the dresser and its contents is useful in stabilizing the position of the crib and its contents, and thus adding to the safety of the infant.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
In a bed a headboard with a pair of spaced 4 side rails extending forwardly therefrom, a chest positioned with its back wall extended across the front ends of the side rails, hooks mounted on the front ends of the side rails, the back wall of the chest being formed with slotsin which said hooks are engaged for removably attaching the front ends of the side rails to the chest, front legs depending from the front corners of the chest, the chest being formed in the bottom of its rear corners with recesses, rear legs positioned in said recesses, and means pivotally connecting said rear legs to the chest to be pivoted out of said recesses to be depended from the bottom of the chest, whereby when the chest is disconnected from the side rails by disengaging saidhooks from said slots said rear legs can be pivoted out of said recesses to their depended.
positions to support the chest in conjunction with the front legs while the chest is disconnected" from the side rails.
