FISH AND GUN BOX Filed Dec. 14, 1946' INVENTOR. PAUL A. FLEMIN ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 21, 1950 FISH AND GUN BOX Paul A. Fleming, La Crescenta, Calif. Application December 14, 1946, Serial No. 716,299
1 Claim.
This invention relates to cases or kits, and relates more particularly to portable devices of this character for carrying fishing and hunting equipment and the like.
It is an object of the present invention to pro" 5, vide a kit of this character that is convenient to use and which is compact, so as to occupy a minimum of space in an automobile or other storage space, but which will provide ample room for the necessary fishing or hunting equipment, or both types of such equipment.
It is another object of the invention to provide a device of this character having a compartment for fishing rods or guns, or both such rods and guns, and other compartments for other fishing l5 and hunting equipment or accessories, such as reels, lines, flies, shells, etc.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device of this character which is cylindrical in shape, when closed, which may be stood on end, and in which, when opened, the respective parts will be on an even keel on a supporting surface such as the ground, a table, or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having a hinged partition between the upper and lower parts, said partition being so constructed and arranged as to normally stand upright when the box is open but which can be swung into a closed position with respect to the upper part of the kit to provide a cover therefor, which may be latched to said upper kit part.
It is a still further object of the invention toprovide a device of this character which may be carried, in the open position, by means of the partition or cover of the upper kit portion.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be brought out in the following part of the specification.
Referring to the drawings which are for illustrative purposes only,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying the present invention, with the respective upper and lower parts in the closed and latched position;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device in the open position;
Fig. 3 is a perspective of the device in a partly open position; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the kit comprises a casing having upper and lower casing members indicated generally by the respective reference numerals l0 and II. Each casing member or part is semi-cylindrical in cross section and when said parts are in the closed position, the kit is cylindrical in shape and will accommodate the above referred to equipment so that it may be stored and conveniently carried about; and because of the cylindrical shape of the device. it will occupy a minimum of storage space.
The respective parts It] and II comprise semicylindrical walls 12 and I3 respectively, which may be made of sheet metal or the like, and are closed at each end by semi-circular walls i4 and I5 respectively, which are at right angles to the axis of the case and permit the device to stand on end. The two parts Ill and H are hinged to gether along adjacent edges by means of a hinge I6. member ill are secured suitcase type fasteners, indicated generally at IT in Fig. 1. These fasteners each comprise a part l8, disposed adjacent the free longitudinal edge of the upper member in and are provided with tongues I9 adapted to be received in sockets 20 of mating fastener members 2| secured adjacent the free longitudinal edge of the lower member I I, said fasten-- ers being longitudinally spaced apart. Positioned intermediate the fasteners is a lock, indicated generally at 22 in Fig. 1, and comprises a tongue or latch 23 hinged to a base 24 secured to the upper member 10 adjacent its free edge, and a latch receiving member 25 secured to the lower .member adjacent the free edge thereof.
on the top member In, intermediate the ends of the kit, so that said kit may be easily carried when closed. The handle 21 comprises a pair of similar parts, each including a strap member 28 having its ends linked through longitudinally spaced clevices 29 secured to the wall of the upper member It. The respective clevices of each handle part are peripherally spaced apart to such an extent as to permit the top member of the case to rest on a supporting surface'when the device is open, as shown in Fig. 4.
Within the upper member l0 there are a plurality of longitudinally spaced supporting strips 30, which may be of sheet metal or any other suitable material. Each of the supporting strips 30 is provided with a strap 3| centrally secured to the respective strips 30 by means of a rivet 32. The free ends of each part of the straps 3| are provided with one part 33, of a snap fastener, the complementary part 34 of said fasteners being secured to the strips 30 adjacent their ends.
The straps 3| are for the purpose of securing Adjacent the respective ends ofltheupper fishing pole sections within the upper member 18, or they may be used to secure gun sections. However, if desired, the kit may be of sufiicient length to accommodate an assembled gun so that it will be immediately available for use upon opening the kit.
The device is provided with a partition wall indicated generally at 35, which is secured to the upper member H! by means of hinges 36 which are spaced longitudinally of said wall 35, and are secured to the cover adjacent the hinge 16. The partition wall 35 serves as a cover ior the open side of the upper member ID, and is provided with a notch 31 in the free edge portion thereof, for reception of a latch member 38 which comprises a strip of resilient sheet metal having one end secured to the upper member of the kit adjacent the free edge thereof and having a generally U-shaped portion 39 extending from said free edge and adapted to engage the cover 35 and latch same in a position to close said upper member.
The hinges 36 are so constructed and attached to the upper member H3 and cover 35 so as to limit its swinging movement to an upright position when the kit is opened, as shown in Fig. 4.
Means for yieldingly urging the cover 35 to an upright position when the case is opened and the latch 38 is released, is provided and com prises a coil spring ii an end ll of which is secured to the cover 35 by means of a rivet 42, or other suitable means, and the opposite end 43 is secured to the upper member by means of a rivet 44.
The lower member II is provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced separating walls ity of compartments in which fishing tackle, shells, and the like, may be stored.
When the kit is closed and locked, it may be carried about by means of the handle 21, parts of which are then in the position shown in Fig. 1. When the kit is opened and the latch 38 is released, the respective parts of the device assume the positions shown in Fig. 4 so that access may be had to articles in either of the casing members.
In order to prevent opening movement of the respective upper and lower members of the case beyond the position shown in Fig. 4, a pair of stop members 46 and 41' are attached to the upper and lower members 50 and II respectively, adjacent the hinge It.
Means may also-=be provided for carrying the wjfiflforld yiding said lower, member intola pl-uralkit when in the open position, and this means comprises a plurality of holes 48 spaced longitudinally apart adjacent the free edge of the cover 35 and adjacent the longitudinal center thereof. These holes 48 are of sufficient size for reception of the users fingers and are disposed on opposite sides of the longitudinal center of the cover 35 so as to balance the kit and hold it against tilting. Of course, if it is so desired, an elongated slot could be used instead of the holes 48.
I claim:
A portable kit, comprising: a cylindrical case formed of a pair of semi-cylindrical casing members; means hinging said members along adjacent edges to form upper and lower case members; a separating wall hinged to the upper casing memher and providing a cover therefor, said hinges being so constructed and arranged as to limit opening movement of said cover to substantially a right angle to the plane of the open side of the upper casing member; a latch for securing the wall to the open side of the upper casing member; spring means secured to the cover and to the Wall for urging the cover in the opening direction when the device is open and the latch released; stops on the casing members for limiting opening movement thereof; means for securing elongated objects in the upper casing member; longitudinally spaced partitions in the lower casing member; a plurality of spaced holes in the cover adjacent the longitudinal center of said cover and adjacent the free edge thereof; means for releasably securing the casing members in the closed position; and handle means for carrying the kit when closed, said handle means "comprising agpair of members having anchoring means peripherally spaced apart so that when the kit is opened the curved surfaces of the respective casing members will rest on a support.
