UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'WINFIELD S. TRUITT, OF WESTON, KENTUCKY.
SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,112, dated November 29, 1881.
Application filed Api-ll 2s, lsel. (No model.)
' To all 'whom it may concern BeitknowntbatLWINFIELDSGOTTTRUITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weston, in the county of Crittenden and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful llnproveulent in Snap-Hooks, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. l
TheV object of my invention is to provide a safety snap-hook which may be quickly and easily attached to a leather rein without the use of brads or thread.A
Myinvention consists in two hooks combined in a peculiar'manner, and provided with serrated clamping-jaws for attaching it to a leather rein, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a plan view 5 Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section, and Figs. 3 and 4 detail views.
The hook a is provided with a hollow shank, a', which receives and holds the shank b of the inner hook, b,which is grooved on the outer portion of its curved surface to form a bed for the outer hook, against which it is pressed by Ya small spiral spring, c, inclosed in the said hollow shank. The hook b is provided with aV guide,'b2, near its lower end, for receiving the point of the outer hook, whereby the latter may be held securely in place. The hollow shank ct is rigidly attached to a wedge-shaped jaw, d,which has a second jaw, d', pivot-ed thereto, 'so that the leather rein c may betclanlped between them. Theinner surfaces of the jaws are serrated to prevent the rein from slipping, and the metal loop d2, which is pressed irlnly against the inclined outer surfaces of the jaws by the coiled spring d", serves to hold the jaws together.
Itrwill be seen that by pressing the inner hook down a ring may be inserted, and when once in place it is not liable to be accidentally released. Should the rein be broken, it will require but a moment to open the claln ps and secure it'again as rmly as before.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A snap-hook consisting in two hooks, one slidingwithin the other, and provided with two serrated clamping-jaws, substantially as shown and described.
2. In asnap-hook, the wedge-shaped serrated jaws d d', in combination with the loop d2 and coiled spring (Z3, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a snaphook, the hook a, having hollow shank a! and spring c, in colnbination with the grooved hook b, having guide b2, substantially as shown and described.
