3 Claims. (01. 224-2) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in knife sheaths and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a knife sheath including novel and improved means for holding a knife in position to the sheath.

Another important object of the present invention is to provide a safety loop attachment for knife sheaths that is so designed as to prevent loss of a knife held by the sheath and which will facilitate the placement of or the removal of the knife relative to the sheath in a convenient manner.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a safety loop attachment for knife sheaths that is extremely neat and attractive in appearance.

A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a knife sheath that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure l is a front elevational view of the knife sheath constructed in accordance with the present invention;

Figure 2 is a fragmentary rear elevational view of the present knife sheath;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 3-3 of Figure l; and

Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing the present sheath in use for holding a knife, and with parts of the sheath shown in section.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral I represents the present sheath generally, comprising an elongated rear wall I2 and a forward wall I4 that are preferably secured to each other adjacent the edges thereof by rivets or the like I6 to provide a knife blade receiving pocket.

The upper edge I8 of the rear wall I2 is folded rearwardly upon itself and secured to itself by rivets or the like 20 to provide a sleeve or casing 22 that engages one longer side 24 of a substantially rectangular ring 26. Loosely receiving the remaining longer side 28 of the ring 26, is a fur- Cfl ther sleeve or casing 30 that is formed at one end of an elongated strip of leather 32. This strip 32 is bent rearwardly as at 34 and secured to itself by rivets or the like 36 to provide a belt engaging loop 38 which terminates in a pair of strands or

In practical use of the present invention the handle portion 50 of a knife blade 52 that is positioned in the pocket between the rear wall I2 and forward Wall I4 is frictionally embraced by the

40 and 42, as shown in Figure 4, to prevent loss of the knife. There is a loop 54 formed in the

40 and 42 behind the rear wall I2 to permit the rear wall I2 to be raised up far enough so that the knife handle 50 may be disengaged with the

laces

40 and 42. When the knife is removed from the pocket between the forward and rear walls of the sheath III, the rear wall l2 then slides downwardly far enough so that the weight of the rear wall I2 hangs on the ring 26. This will permit the forward loop 56 of the

laces

40 and 42 to remain partially open for ease in returning the knife in the knife blade receiving pocket.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A sheath. comprising a forward wall and a rear wall secured to each other to provide a knife blade pocket, a sleeve carried by the rear wall, a belt engaging member formed with a sleeve, a ring loosely carried by the sleeves for slidably connecting the rear wall to the belt engaging member, said rear wall having a plurality of openings, and means carried by the belt engaging member extendable through the openings for frictionally engaging the handle of a knife.

2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said means includes a plurality of laces carried by the belt engaging member tied to form a loop.

3. In a sheath having a rear wall and a forward wall secured to the rear wall to provide a knife blade pocket, an elongated strap having first and second end portions, said second end portion of said strap being folded inward upon and secured to itself to provide a loop, means received in said loop and connected to said rear wall, the first end portion of said strap being fixed to said loop to provide another loop for receiving a belt, a pair of spaced extensions projecting iromthe'firsjtefia portion rsaid strap, means carried bysaid fear Wall'slidably rciv= ing said extensions, said extensions being tied forwardly of said rear wall to provide a knife handle receiving loop.
