PATENT @FFIGE,
EDWARD W. BLAOKHALL, OF TORONTO, CANADA.
GAS-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,010, dated November 22, 1881. Application filed. June 29, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have made certain Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is intended more particularly to be applied to burners by a simple addition or adjunct thereto, the object being to heat the gas therein by its own flame to expand it, to save in consumption and improve the combustion by said expansion.
In the drawings the figure is a side elevation of a gas-pipe with the burner unscrewed.
A represents an ordinary gas pipe or fixture, and a the burner.
Brepresents a small platinum (orother metal) tuheorpipe, oneend,b ,(theinduction,)screwed into or formed on the burner, from whence it curves up and over the burner a above the flame, or in close proximity thereto, and the other or eduction end, b screwed also into the burner to, above the other end, 12
The action is as follows: The gas enters the auxiliary pipe B at the induction-opening N. The gas being lighted at the burner, it heats continuously all the gas as it slowly passes through said burner above the flame. This heating constantly expands the gas, and, of course, the expansion acts bot-h ways in the pipe B-tha-t is, presses backward as well as forward, a sufficient quantity supplying the burner a through the eduction end 1) while the same expansion forces back or retards the flow from the supply source through the pipe A.
It is well known that heating gas expands it; also, that there is thereby a saving in the consumption.
I am aware that there are devices for heating gas to expand it; but none, I believe, that is arranged like mine.
By this arrangement these gasheating burners may be attached to any fixtures, and the usual globe can be used.
By this simple device for expanding the gas a saving in consumption is got, as well as improvement in its illuminating power, with little or no expense for fixtures, &c.
I claim The combined burner a and gas-heater B b b and with the partition It, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereuntosigned my name in the presence of two subscribing I witnesses.
JOHN H. SMITH.
