UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL O. GAULT, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
TOBACCO-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,831, dated November 22, 1881.
Application filed August 12, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL U. GAULT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and usefulImprovementin Tobacco-Outters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters or figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to devices for cutting plug-tobacco; and it consists in providing certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will hereinafter be fully described and pointed out.
In the drawings hereto attached the device is shown as follows:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the inside of the frame 0, with other parts in vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the knife and knife-head.
A is the lever by which the knife is actuated. B is the knife; B, the knife-head; O O, the frame work, which consists of flanged plates set together with their flanges facing each other, leaving an inclosed cavity, which receives the knife and knife-head and part of the actuating-lever. c c c, &c., are the flanges above named. Other parts as lettered will appear in the following general description.
The knife-head is provided at each end with friction-rollers E E, mounted on pins 0 c.
The frame-plates (J O are provided with curved slots F F, for receiving the said friction-rollers and furnishing bearings for the same. The lower side of these slots may be formed so as to serve as the bearing-faces of said rollers; or, as shown,-auxiliary pieces of soft metal may be set in and form said bearing-faces.
G G are the auxiliary pieces referred to. They are attached on the inside of the plates 0 O. The objects of these pieces G are to avoid friction in case the rollers do not move easily, and to prevent wear. They are made preferably of brass.
It will be seen that the knife, being mounted in these slots, will niove when cutting as the form of the slots directs, and that this form, as shown, is such that at the first of the cut the blade moves slightly oblique, and at the finish it In order that the knife may move freely as I directed by the slots, the actuating-lever at the point where the knife-head attaches to it is slotted (see (I) and sets loosely over the pin (1.
I, of course, do not desire to be limited to the precise form of slot F shown, as it may be varied to get a more or less oblique movement of the knife. If the form is an exact arc, the lever A need not be slotted, provided the said are has a proper concentric arrangement.
I am aware that it is not new to mounta knife in oblique guiding-slots and actuate it by means of a rack and toothed involute; also, that it is not new to locate a knife in an inclined passage and raise it by a lever connected to the knife by means of a link, and lower it by forcing the short arm of the lever against the knife. These devices differ from mine, in that my knife has ahead, B, provided with a pivot-pin, which serves as a support or hearing for the short arm of handle or lever A, by means of which the knife is elevated or lowered without employing any secondary parts, making a cheaper and better device than any now in use.
What I claim as new is 1. In a tobacco-cutter, a knife mounted in oblique guiding-slots and having a head provided with a pivot-pin, for the purpose set forth, in combination with a handle having a slot for the reception of the pivot-pin, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. A tobacco-cutter having flanged plates provided with oblique or curved slots for suspending the knife-head, in combination with a knife and knife-head, having bearing-pins for mounting the same within the curved slots, and a pivot-pin, for the purpose set forth, and a handle or lever having a slot for the reception of the pivot-pin, substantially as described.
3. A tobacco-cutter having frame-plates pro= vided with slots for guiding aknife-head, and In testimony that I claim the foregoing I lined with plates of soft metal, in combination have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of m with a knife-head having bearing-pins for July, 1881. mounting the same in said slots, and a pivot- I 5 pin, for the purpose set forth, and an actuat- SAMUEL GAULT' ing lever 0r handle provided with a slot for the Witnesses: reception of the pivot-pin, substantially as de- JNO. K. HALLOGK, scribed. 20131. H. PORTER.
