T. PATES.
I PLANTING PLOW. No. 249,790. Patented Nov. 22,1881.
wc'iwsse s: 'IYLQGWT: 7%cnwmgafj, W cbr heron.
THOMAS PATES, OF ALTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE HAPGOOD PLOW COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE. i
PLANTING=PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,790, dated November 22, 1881,
Application filed July 7, 1881.
To all whom ttmay concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS PATES, of Alton, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Planting-Plows, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in planting-plows in which the planting attachto ments are assembled and supported on abent beam and adapted for use in a sulky planting-plow.
My invention consists, first, in an improved construction of the drill-tooth stock; and, sec- 0nd, in the construction of the center bar, to
. which the stock is attached; and, third, in the arrangement and combination as hereinafter shown.
In the drawings my improvements are illustrated attached to a listing planting-plow, in which Figure I is a vertical sectional view ot'a planting-plow with my improvements shown, and showing how they are arranged and'combiued with the beam and plow. Fig. 2 is a top view of that part of Fig. 1 below the dotted lines 00 a. Fig.3 is a view of the drilltooth stock 0, enlarged, showing my improvements, the groove 0 and the keeper 0. Fig. 4 is a cross-section view taken on the dotted lines z z of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view of the center bar,'a, showing its construction and showing the upright part 1).
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
O is my improved drill-tooth stock, having a perforation throughout, pipe-like, from top to bottom, through which the corn passes from the dropping-box, and on the lower part 0t 40 the stock a steel tooth or blade, 0, is attached, as shown; and 011 the front side of the stock I make a groove, 0, and on the rear side I make a keeper, 0. Thepurpose of the groove is to keep the drill-tooth stock perpendicular by embracing the sides of the upright 12, and the purpose of the keeper 0 is to keep the stock from dropping away from the clasp holding the stock in place, as hereinafterset forth.
a is my improved center-bar, consisting of 0 a bar of iron having its forward end fitted to support the share of the listing-plow W, and
on the rear part of the center-bar I make a bend upright, b, to which the stock 0 is at- (No model.)
taohed, as shown. The center-bar, a, is attached to the bottom end of the beam A with 5 5 bolts or rivets,as shown in Fig. 1, the bottom end of the beam being set off from the center to admit the center-bar to occupy the center of the plow. The center-bar a is secured in position as shown in Fig. 1, and the groove 0 embracing the uprights b with a two-nutted LJ-clasp, securing the stock 0 in its position, the clasp passing through perforations in the shovel-beam 7c, as is clearly shown in the drawings.
The drill-tooth C may be adjusted up and down by a movement of the groove 0 on the upright b,- and should any loosening of the nuts on the LJ-clasp occur, whereby the tooth and stock may drop, the keeper 0 would rest on the top of shovel-beam is, keeping it from being lost out of its position.
In operation the listing-plow W throws its furrow-slice both ways, cleaning a wide furrow, the drill-tooth G, adjusted to enter the subsoil, throwing open a narrow furrow, into which the corn is dropped through the stock 0, and the shovels P P covering the corn by returning the loose soil thrown out by the drilltooth. The groove 0, sliding on the upright b, affords a simple and ready means of adjusting the drill-tooth to any desired depth into the subsoil, and the center-bar a provides for securing the drill-tooth and covering-shovels closely following the plow, and not easily to get out of order.
Having thus set forth my invention, I claim as follows:
1. In a planting plow, the hollow pipe-like drill-tooth stock 0, supporting on its lower 0 part a blade or tooth, O, and having a groove,
0, extending along its front side above the blade 0, as shown, and for the purpose specified.
, 2. In a planting-plow, the center-bar a,con- 5 structed with the bend part I), extending upright and supporting the drill-tooth stock, as shown, in combination with the beam A, and
- the drill-tooth stock 0, and the groove 0 of the stock 0, embracing the sides of the part I), as
shown.
- THOMAS PATES.
