FOLDING BEDSTBAD.
I im@ N. PETERS. Phuloillhngmphcr. Washington. D. C.
DNITED STATES PATENT vQEEICE.
PHILLIP KOTLOWSKY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,773, dated November 22, 1881.
Application filed September 2l, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILLir Ko'rLowsKY, of New York city, county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Bedst-eads, of which the following` is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The merits of the invention are its simplicity, cheapness, and durability, and that it is more fully adapted to all the requirements of the bcdstead and tzc-f-ttc or lounge than any heretofore made.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a ttc--ttc or settee in perspective view. Fig. 2 represents plan of same when extended or unfolded for the purpose of a bedstead. Fig. 3 represents side elevation of same, part in section, line y y. Fig. et shows plan of saine when closed or folded up, section at x a'. Fig. 5 represents enlarged view of one length of side detached.
Similar letters refer to similar parts th roughout the several views.
A, Fig. l, represents back or frame of a tte--ttc; B, the seat.
In Figs. 2 and 3, A represents the frame or headboard of a bed; and B, which is hinged to the foot G, represents, when raised, the footboard ot' a' bed.- C represents extension-sides, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5, and hinged together at the joints l 2 3, and thereby making one continuous side frame when extended. The side frame, (l, is also hinged to crossstay F at a., and to the foot G at b.
D isa movable part of side frame, C, on which the slats E rest, and the whole being supported upon the springs e. The plates D are retained in their proper places by the guide-pins d, which are firmly secured in the plate D and move freely in the slots IL, (shown in section, Fig. 5.) The uniform adjustment of the plates D as to height of lift is secured by the chainsf, and the end of said plates D are convex, to prevent them from fouling when one of the springs c is compressed more than the other.
H represents a roller around which to wind the slats E, said slats E being secured to the exible bands J. The roller H is provided with a shank, p, extending to the outsidev of the frame A', for the purpose of applying a wrench or crank to wind or coil up the slats E upon roller H.
S represents springs attached to side of frame C, directly over the joints l 2 3, to prevent them from closing or folding when in use, and made of sufficient strength to allow of easy folding when desired.
Vhen the bed is extended, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and it is required to be closed, the flexible band J, with slats E, is wound or coiled upon the roller H under the seat, and the side frames, C, are folded together in the manner shown in Fig. 4, and secured by the fastener or latch i'. The foot-boardB is turned down in the position lshown in Fig. 1, forming a lounge or ttc--ttc, and all the parts are covered from view and dirt or dust.
The style of finishing the frame, seat. and back is no part of this invention. It may be plain,as shown, or upholstered,if desired, and can be adapted for single or double beds, it'. desired.
The object of my invention is the combination of two useful articles of furniture, so as to fully meet all the requirements of their respective uses. The eheapness and simplicity of construction place it within the limits of every household.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y l. In a folding bed, the combination ot' the back A, seat B, jointed side frame, C, and springs S on joints l 23, for retaining them in position when extended, with the movable plates D, provided with guides d, said plates being supported by springs e,t-he frames C and plates D being folded under the seatB ofthe lounge or tte--tte when desired.
2. In a folding bed,in combination with side frame, C, the iexible bands J, with slats E attached thereto, the saine to be wound or coiled upon roller H under theseat B of lounge or ttc--ttc, when desired, substantially as and for the purpose described.
PHILLIP KOTLOWSKY.
