COMBINATION UNDERWAIST AND BRASSIRE Filed Dec. 9, 1946 ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 7, 95
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINATION UNnEaWAis'r AND BRASSIRE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to a combination underwaist and brassire.
An object of the invention is to provide a garment structure of the above stated kind wherein elastic inserts are constructed and arranged in a more advantageous manner with a view to making the garment fit better and more comfortably around the body of the wearer.
Another object is to provide the garment with an open portion adjacent to certain fastener l means thereof, so that a lighter and more com fortably fitting garment will result.
Still another object is to provide a garment of the stated class which will, in each size sold, adapt itself to individuals in whom waist measurements vary considerably, so that a less number of sizes need be kept in stock to sell to all customers.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention will hereinafter appear.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention,
Fig. 1 is a front View of a garment embodying the invention, on a smaller scale than that of the remaining views.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side View of the upper portion of the garment.
Fig. 3 is a back View of the upper portion of the garment, the lower part thereof being broken away in order to contract the View.
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail taken on the plane indicated by line fl-li on Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a fragmental sectional detail taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
The garment shown in the drawing comprises an upper portion IIJ, a lower or skirt portion II, and breast supporting outwardly convex cup portions I2 in its upper portion.
The garment also includes adjustable shoulder straps I3 provided in front with the bifurcations I4, this shoulder strap structure, separately considered, forming no part of the present invention.
Considered in further detail the garment includes a front panel I5 having spaced apart arcuate recesses I6 bordering the lower edges of its aforesaid breast supporting parts I2, said panel having an upwardly directed tongue II be tween said parts I2; and twin side panels I8 the back edges of which are united to a back panel I9.
The invention resides, in part, in the construction of the upper portion of said back panel I9 and of the parts thereabove. The side panels I8 have secured to them inwardly directed, co-
operating naps 20 and 2 I the `flap 2U being shown carrying male fasteners 22 to cooperate with female fasteners 23 carried by the flap 2I. At least one of the flaps 20, 2I is made of elastic material so as to be elastic in the direction of its length, Spaeed downwardly from said flaps the back elastic gusset 24, there being between said gusset and the material at each side thereof an opening 25, shown as an elongated ellipse with its longest dimension extending transversely of the back panel i9.
Said elastic gusset lls in a triangular cut-out of considerable breadth at its upper end and quite long, said cut-out being made downwardly from the lower edge of said opening 25, and tapering downwardly to a narrow lower end portion located not far above the hips of the wearer. Said gusset is shown having projecting slightly from its back surface wire fastening loops 21 arranged in longitudinal and transverse rows. One edge portion of said gusset is secured to one edge portion of the material along one side of said cut-out, the opposite edge portion of the material carrying a row of fastener hooks 28 to cooperate with said loop fasteners 21. Downwardly from the lower end of said gusset 24 eX- tends for a considerable distance (below the hips of the wearer) a slit 3U which is opened and closed by operating a zipper 3 I.
In addition to the back gusset 24 the garment is provided at its upper end and adjacent to each breast supporting portion I2 with a downwardly tapering elastic gusset 32.
By the arrangement of gussets and fasteners which has been described a Wide range of adjustability is afforded for the upper portion of the garment so that one stock size of it will fit well upon individuals varying considerably in chest measurements.
Describing an additional structural feature, an internal, body encircling member 35 is provided, of the nature of a narrow skirt, this member being vertically divided at least one point so as not to interfere with circumferential adjustment of the garment to fit properly around the waists of different wearers. The upper edge portion 36 of this member is shown folded over toward the outer side of the garment and stitched to the lower part of the two-ply breast portion I2 so as to present a smoother surface to the body of the wearer in this part of the garment.
Owing to the garment being provided with the open space 25 in the upper part of the back thereof, and to said space being bordered below by the elastic gusset 24 and above by the flaps 20, 2|, at least one of which is elastic, the part of the garment between the shoulder blades is rendered highly exible, so that the muscles which control arm movement are given additional comfort and freedom of movement.
I claim:
1. A womans undergarment adapted to cover the body from a point above the breasts to a point below the hips, comprising a fabric front panel adapted to extend from the region of the breasts of a wearer to the lower end of the garment, a fabric back panel extending from a height slightly below the upper end of said front panel to the lower end of the garment, a pair of fabric side panels attached at their lateral margins to the lateral margins of the front and back panels, respectively, and extending the length of the garment, said side panels being coterminous with said front and back panels at their lower ends and extending to a height above the back panel, said front, back, and side panels cooperatively forming a continuous bodyencircling member, breast supporting parts attached to the upper margin of said front panel and to the forward margins of the upper end portions of said side panels, a pair of ilaps attached respectively to the rear margins of the upper end portions of said side panels on a level with the lower portion of said breast supporting parts, said flaps carrying means for the attachment of the same together at the back of a wearer, said flaps, when secured about a wearer, cooperating with the upper end of said back panel to deiine a horizontally elongated lenticular opening in the garment extending for a limited distance partially across the wearers back, said back panel having a centrally disposed downwardly tapering triangular-shaped cut-out extending from the upper margin thereof, an elastic gusset in said cut-out secured to said back panel along one margin, cooperative fastening means on said gusset and the opposite margin of the cut-out of the back panel for adjustably securing the gusset to said opposite margin, said back panel being provided with a slit from the apex of said cut-out to a point a limited distance therebelow, and means for detachably securing the marginal portions of the back panel along the slit.
2. An undergarment as deiined in claim 1 in which the upper portions of said side panels are provided with centrally disposed downwardly tapering cut-outs extending to a point below the breast supporting parts and elastic gussets mounted in said cut-outs.
,3. A womans undergarment adapted to cover the body from a point above the breasts to a point below the hips, comprising a fabric tube having a front portion provided with breast covering parts, the back portion of said tube terminating at a level below the breasts of a wearer, a pair of aps attached to the tube above the back portion thereof, said flaps carrying means for the attachment of the same behind a wearer, said back portion having a centrally disposed downwardly tapering triangularshaped cut-out extending from the upper margin thereof, an elastic gusset in said cut-out secured to said back panel along one margin, cooperative fastening means on said gusset and the opposite margin of the cut-out of the back panel for adjustably securing the gusset to said opposite margin, said back panel being provided with a slit from the apex of said cut-out to a point a limited distance therebelow, and means for detachably securing the marginal portions of the back panel along the slit.
