COMB-BARRETTE Filed March 4, 1948 'INVENTOR Harry M0565 ATTORN EY Patented Feb., 7, 1950 '2,496,487y COMB-BARRETTE Harry Moses, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application March 4, 1948, Serial No. 13,010
This invention relates to combs; relates particularly to barrette combs; and relates especially to combinations of barrettes and combs having means for fastening them into the wearers hair.
Among the more usual feminine ornaments are barrettes or hair combs of a wide variety of patterns which are thrust into the wearers hair and are supposed to be held in place by the action of various styles of clamps or by actionof rthe hair strands on the teeth of the comb. This: holding action is, however, poor, and combs are quite insecurely held, especially when they have elaborate decorative portions.
The present invention provides a combination comb and barrette structure in which there is a spring-held fastening means adapted t engage auxiliary strands of the wearers hair to hold the barrette and comb combination rmly in place, while at the same time the holding means is concealed, partly within the structure of the comb, and partly by the wearers hair.
This object is attained by the provision oi a tubular member forming a portion of the combbarrette combination within which there is positioned an elastic tensioning means and portions of one or more U-shaped spring clamping members Which engage strands of the wearers hair, holding it against the back of the comb body, the U-shaped locking members being held by the elastic tension means, and, if desired, by locking means on the outer surface of the comb body.
Thus the invention provides a combination comb and barrette having teeth at the bottom thereof, a tubular body member, to which there may be attached, if desired, a decorative element, Within which body there is positioned an elastic tension means cooperating With arcuate clamp members drawn against and into the body by the tensioning means, with exterior locking means, if desired. Other objects and details of the invention will be apparent from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a front view oi the comb structure;
Fig. 2 is a side view in section of the same structure;
Fig. 3 is a top view in section of the same structure;
Fig. 4 is a back view of the comb structure showing the clamp means and locking means; and
Fig. 5 is a view of the comb in position in a wearers hair.
The structure of the invention consists of a body member I which is preferably tubular in form and of a suitable length to form a barrette.
1 claim.- (cl. 13a-4s) tive elements.
To the barrette body member I there is then attached a comb portion 2, and, if desired, a decora- Itive member 3 which may take any form desired with'a wide variety of decorative elements such as glass brilliants, imitation pearls, moulded lnsignia, and, in fact, any of the standard decora- Within the tubular body member l, there is positionedone or more arcuate members 4 equipped with fastening means, to which there is attached an elastic tension mem'- -ber This tension .member may take the form of a rubber strip, or may take the form of a metal spring or other type of tension member, as desired. 1t is usually preferable that the tension member t be capable of considerable elongation, to permit of withdrawal of the arcuate members 4 nearly out from the tubular body member I.
It is usually convenient to provide two of the members 4, but this is not essential since the elastic member E may be anchored to a suitable holding means within the body member I, and a single arcuate member 4 may then be used. Alternatively, the body member I may contain two or more tubular portions, in each of which there may be provided one or two arcuate members 4, as desired. By this means a considerable range of security of fastening is obtainable. Also, the outer ends of the arcuate members 4 may be perforated with holes 'I cooperating with pin members 8 to provide still rmer locking means.
In the operation of this invention, the comb teeth 2 which may take any desired form or length, are inserted in the wearers hair, the comb being placed in any desired position. Thereafter. at least one of the arcuate members 4 is pulled out from the body I against the tension of the member 6 and then allowed to retract under the pull of the member E with the outer end enclosing a substantial number of strands of the wearers hair. When the member 4 has been fully retracted into the comb body I, the outer end may be locked over the pin member 8. This procedure may be repeated with each of the additional arcuate members 4 until a solidly fastening situation is produced. This procedure holds the comb-barrette combination firmly in place in the wearers hair and makes the best possible display of the decorative portion 3 which can be had (if such is used), and the various members stay rmly in place through almost unlimited amounts of physical activity on the part of the wearer.
Thus, the device of the invention provides a comb-barrette combination having spring-held and doubly-spring-held locking means holding the comb structure solidly in and on a wearers hair,
A series of holes 9 are provided in the body member I and an absorbent member I is positioned back of the holes. This member serves as a convenient means for carrying a supply of perfume which may evaporate through the holes 9 yielding a continuing supply of pleasant aroma under circumstances Where the rate of evaporation is low and a small supply maintains a perfumed state for a prolonged period of time.
Thus the inventionlprovidesv primarily a body having a plurality of Ushape`d clamps With'one leg of each drawn into the tubular body by a spring member to provide a primary fastening means for the body, with comb tooth members attached to the body entering a Wearers hair to provide a second means for holding thev structure in a wearers hair. It .mayfbefnotedlthat the body l and the comb teeth 2 with the clamps, as described, may be used to forma simlple'combbarrette combination, .with such decorations on the'body: l aszmay be desired. Alternatively, and -within the scope of the invention-such auxiliary and 'additional'decorative 'members as are desired :may `be attachedtoJthel body 3 either lalong the fasce of the bodyior along the. upperportion thereof, asdesired.
While there vare aboverdisclosed'but'a limited 'numberrof embodim'entstofethedevice of the infvention, itis possible'to'wprovide still other embodiments .without departing from' the inventive fconcept. hereindisclosed, and it is' therefore de- ;sired that only suchlimitations lne-.mipcsedsupon ihollow-back and the other positioned outside of `rthe hollow back, vand a tension member attached to said extensions within said tubular structure,
' whereby said hair clip members are elastically positioned to grip a wearers hair against said tubular member, and catch members on the outer rear side of said tubular structure cooperating with perforations located in the said extensions outside of the hollow back, to lock said extensions in place.
