BUTTER PACKAGE.
Patented Nov. 15,1881.
WITNESSES ATTORNEYS.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD HAYWARD, OF FREWSBURG, NEW YORK.
BUTTER-PAC KAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 249,619, dated November 15, 1881.
Application filed August 29, 1881. (Model) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD HAYWARD, of Frewsburg, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Butter and Similar Packages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide butter, oyster, sugar, and similar packages having means by which the lids are securely held in place upon the packages, and by which the packages may be hermetically sealed, and means whereby the handling of such packages is much facilitated.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in
which similar letters of reference indicate cor-' responding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved package. Fig.2 is acentral vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the nut or head and handle. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the boss by which the rod is secured in the bottom of the package; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the key or retaining device.
In the drawings, A represents the package, which may be of a suitable size and construction; and B represents the lid, which is preferably formed of two thicknesses of material, a. and a, secured together in such manner that the grain of the thicknesses shall run at an angle to each other, to prevent all danger of warping and all danger of splitting the lid when the large nut or head 0 is forcibly screwed down upon it; andthe lid is formed with the central opening, a, through it, through which the rod D passes. This rod is screw-threaded at its upper end, and the lower end ot it is formed with the square head 6, which fits in a corresponding recess, 6, formed in the bottom of the boss H, which boss is secured to the bottom of the package by the screws or rivets f passing through the rivet-holes t in the bottom flange of the boss, as shown in Fig. 2.
The large nut or head 0 is formed with a central screw-threaded opening, at, to fit upon the threaded end of the rod D, and to it is hinged the handle F by means of the pins or studs g g, which pass through the ends of the handleinto the annular red uced portion h,whieh rises a suitable distance above the flange h, as shown clearly in Fig. 3, to permit the handle to be turned down upon the lid, as shown in Fig. 2. r
The rod D and the boss H should be made of malleable iron galvanized, so that the contents of the package will not be injured from contact therewith.
In order to prevent all danger of removal of the nut or head 0 during the sending or return of the package, I form the upper end of the rod D with the perforation t", through which I pass one end of the wire j, the other end of which is secured in the leaden button J, which button is formed with the side slot, 3'. After passing the wire through the hole 4." it is placed in the slotj of the button, and thebutton is then given a stroke, so as to compress the material of the same upon the wire, and thus securely hold it until the wire is cut or broken to permit the removal of the lid, which breaking, should it be done by malicious persons in the transit of the package, is sufficient to hold the express company or other carrier responsible.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.' In packages having the cover held by a central rod threaded and provided with a nut at the upper end, the combination, with said rod and the bottom of package, of the head e, formed on or attached to the lower end of said rod, and the boss H, attached to the bottom of package and provided with the recess 6, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the central bolt, D, secured at the lower end to the bottom of the package A, and having a nut, G, screwing on its outside upper end, of the handle F, pivoted to said nut, as and for the purpose specified.
EDWARD HAYWARD.
