UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE-C FRANCIS E. DROLL, on ST. OHARLES,1\II SSOURT.
. BREECHlNG-BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,597, dated November 15, 1881. Application filed August 12, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS E. DROLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Charles, in the county of St. Charles and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breeching-Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
' reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of devices which are used to connect the back and hip straps of harness, and provision is also made for supporting the traces when the animal is unhitched and it consists of two plates having certain details of construction, which will be hereinafter fullydescribed, and specifically pointed out in the claims. These objects I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the bottom plate. Fig. 2 is a like'view of the top plate,
andFig.3showsthe two plates united together and back and "hip straps and chafe-leather sesists of two side bars, a a, a solid end bar, a, p
cured thereto.
Similar letters refer to like parts in the several views. a
A represents the bottom plate, which conat the rear end, and a pointed extension, 60 at the front end. The two end bars or extensions are provided with holes or perforations for uniting the plate to the chafe-leather. The frameis provided with a central transverse bar,
- a 1 holes in the back and hip straps.
c and two short longitudinal bars, a a, in the center of the flame, which intersect and are connected with the central transverse bar. The central longitudinal bars carry short studs or pins a afiwhich'are adapted to engage with The side bars are constructed with short lugs or projections near their center, which project upwardly, and which, when the top plate is applied,
form side slots or openings for the passage of the back and hip straps.
The top plate, B,is of the general form and outline of the bottom plate, excepting that both end bars are of substantially the same form,
or, in other words, the front extension is omitted from this plate. I) b, and solid end bars, I) b, which have holes or perforations coincident with the holes in the bottom plate, for a purpose hereinafter to be explained. The end bars are each provided with a tooth which projects inwardly toward the center of the frame to prevent any undue play of the straps. The plate B is provided with an arch or bridge, B, which extends from one of the side bars to the other, and consists of two curves orloops, which are adapted to receive and support the traces when the animal is unhitched.
The plate B has side bars, V
The operation of the device is as follows, vizi The bottom plate is laid uponthe pad-leather,
the back and hip straps are adjusted on the studs, the top plate is laid on with the holes or perforations registering with those in the bottom plate, and the two plates and pad-leather are all secured together by means of rivets, which are passed through the holes in the plates and afterward upset. When the two plates are united they form a sort of box, having short studs or pins for securing the back and hip straps and forming slots at both sides for the passage of these straps, as will be readily apparent. By means of my invention Iam enabled to save leather and avoid sewing, as in the ordinary method of connecting these parts of harness. a
While I prefer to use both plates, as above described, it is evident that in some instancesv they may be used separately with advantage.
In cart-harness,for example, the topplate may. bedispensed with, the lower plate may be uni-' ted to the chafe-leather, and the hip and back Having thus fully described my invention, a
what I claim is- 1. The plate A, having side bars with central upwardly-projecting lugs, a perforated rear end bar, a perforatedfront extension, a
centraltransverse bar, and two central longiand adapted who applied to a harness subtudinal bars carrying studs or pins, substanstantially inthe manner and for the purpose tially as set forth. set forth.
2. The plate A,- having side bars with up- In testimony whereofI affix my signature in 5 wardly-prrjecting lugs, a perforated rear end presence of two witnesses.
bar, a perforated front extension, a centra transverse bar, and two central longitudinal FRANCIS DROLL' bars, in combination with the plate B, having Witnesses: corresponding side and end bars and a central EDWARD GEs'r, 1o transverse bridge or arch, forming two loops, PHILIP]? F. BOCHEIL
