The present invention relates to sprinkler heads and is particularly concerned with a new and improved sprinkler nozzle for watering lawns, gardens, etc.
A primary object of the invention is to provide an improved sprinkler head of simple and rugged construction. Another object of the invention is to provide a sprinkler nozzle so designed that the water is ejected therefrom in the form of a fine spray. A particular object of the invention is to provide a sprinkler head adapted 'to be used as a permanent fixture in and around the edges of lawns, etc., as part of a general water distributing and sprinkling system.
Additional objects will become apparent from the following description of the invention and by reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a sprinkler head embodying the present invention, the head being shown as connected to a supply pipe; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the sprinkler head; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken along line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a view through one of the slots in line with the bottom thereof showing a preferred form of slot design.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, the sprinkler head comprises a recessed body member ID having a relatively thick side wall H and a relatively thick end wall I! integral with the side wall. The open end of the recessed body member ID is provided with threads l3 for securing the sprinkler head to a supply pipe M.
A plurality of cylindrical openings iii are provided in the body member at the junction of the side walls H and end wall [2. These openings 16 define jet orifices radially spaced about the periphery of the end wall I2 and extending upwardly and outwardly through the body member. The discharge end of each of the openings I6 terminates in a radial slot I! which may conveniently be formed by saw cuts in the edge of the body member formed by the junction of the outer surfaces of the walls H and the end wall l2. The slots H are each defined by a pair of substantially parallel side walls 2| and a sloping bottom wall 22, the latter merging at its ends respectively with the outer surface of the walls I l and the outer surface of the end wall l2. As is more clearly shown in Fig. 3, slots I'l extend only part way through the walls of the body member I so that the quantity of water introduced into each of the slots is determined by the size of the 2 of the body member 10. The opening [6 should be at least as wide as the slots ll.
In the drawing, the bottom walls 22 of slots ll are shown as being perpendicular to the axis of the cooperating openings l6 and as sloping away from the face of end wall l2 at an angle of about 45. The exact angle of slope of the bottom of the slot is not critical and the slots may be cut in the edge of the member H1 at any angle ranging, for example, from about 30 to with respect to the end wall l2. While each of the openings I! will generally be so arranged that the longitudinal axis thereof is perpendicular to the bottom wall 22 of the cooperating slot, it is not essential that this relationship exist, the more important feature being that the longitudinal axis of the slot be substantially in line with the peripheral edge of the end wall I2 so that the jets issuing from the orifices of the openings l6 will contact the maximum wall area of th slot and thereby more thoroughly be dispersed into the form of a fine spray.
To facilitate the breaking up or dispersion of the water jets, the outer edges of each of the triangular shaped slots I! are preferably displaced slightly inwardly, for example, by means of a swaging tool, as shown at 23 in Fig. 4, so that in effect the walls 2| converge adjacent the outer surface of the body member. By providing such converging surfaces at least in the path of the jets, a breaking up of the main portion of the streams issuing from openings I6 is assured by the contact thereof with the diverging end portions of the slot walls.
From the above description it will be seen that there has been provided in-accordance with the present invention a simple, inexpensive, strong or rugged sprinkler head which is designed efficiently to disperse water or other fluid in the form of a fine spray. The head is particularly adapted to be permanently set in or around the edges of lawns, etc., where because of its rugged con struction it will be able to withstand the abnormal abuse likely to be inflicted thereon under such conditions.
Having described the invention in what are considered to be certain preferred embodiments thereof, it is desired that it be understood that the specific details shown and described herein are merely illustrative and that this invention may be carried out by other means.
What I claim is:
l. A sprinkler head comprising a recessed body member, a plurality of radially spaced slots in the openings l6 connecting the slots with the interior 66 outer edge of said body member formed by the 3 junction of the side and end thereof, said slots having sloping bottom walls, openings defining jet orifices extending through said body member to the bottom of said slots, the longitudinal axis of each of said Openings being substantially in line with the edge of said body member.
2. A sprinkler comprising a recessed body member, a plurality of openings defining jet orifices disposed around the periphery of the end of said body member, the outer end of eachof said open ings terminating in a narrow slot having parallel side walls and a sloping bottom wall, the Width of said openings being at least equal to the Width' of said slots.
