Description

(No Model.)-
} G. OOPMAN. DEVICE FOR HOLDING NIPPLES WHILE BEING THREADED.
No. 249,504. Patented Nov. 15,1881.
I INVENT0RW1 h I BY ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CHARLES COPMAN,OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR )F ONE-HALF TO HENRY T. JARRETT, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING NIPPLES W HILE BEING THREADED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,504, dated November 15, 1881.
A Application filed July 7,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES OoPMAN, of thecity, county, and State ofNewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Nipple-Holders, ofwhich the following is a specification. This invention has reference to an improved nipple-holder for gas and steam fitters, by which a number of difierently-sized sockets arecombined in one tool for the purpose of holding difi'erent-sized pipe ends, for cuttingon a thread at their opposite ends, so as to utilize them as nipples. r
Eieretofore in fitting gas and steam pipes the threaded end portions were generally thrown away as useless, while, if they were preserved and their unthreaded ends properly threaded,
. they could be used as nipples.
My invention is designed to preserve these useless ends of pipe and prepare them for use; and the invention consists of a combination nipple-holder having radially-extending rods or bars of different diameters corresponding to the sizes of steam and gas pipes employed, the rods or bars being provided with interiorlythreaded sockets at the ends for screwing in' the end portions of pipes, so that their outer ends may he guided to the stocks and screwthreaded.
The accompanying drawing reprrsents a perspective viewofmyimproved combination nipple-holder, partly in section, through the end sockets of the barrels.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawing represents my improved combination nipple-holder, which is constructed of four, six,or more radially-extending rods or bars B of different diameters, according to the standard sizes of gas and steam pipes in general use. The rods or bars B are prefera- 'an inch to one inch or more of clear interior diameter, so as to accommodate a corresponding numberof sizes of pipes. The rodsor bars are provided at their ends with interiorlythreaded sockets b '0, into which the pipe ends are screwed for the purpose of threading their opposite ends and forming nipples therefrom. Whatever be the size of pipe ends to be threadedone of the rods or bars is adapted to hold it, while the opposite rod or bar is applied to apipe-vise, so as to properly hold it for the screw-cutting machine. The rods or bars B serve then as the guides in cutting the threads on the pipe ends, so asto utilize even thesmallest pipe end and change it into a nipple. In this manner the nipple-holder becomes akind of universal tool for the gas and steam fitters shop and admits the utilization of pipe ends of any size for nipples, dispensing thereby to a great extent with the expense of specially buying the same.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The nipple-holding device herein described,
consisting of the several rods or bars of different sizes crossing each other at the middle, the projecting end of each being provided with a screw-threaded socket, as and for the purpose Set forth. i
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 'my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 27th day of J nne,
CHARLES GOPMAN.
