1 Claim.
This invention relates to an improvement in corn shellers of the type in which the cobs and shucks are forced through a throat opening controlled by means of a rotatable, spring-actuated cone damper. In shellers of this type the throat opening wears away rapidly from abrasion with the cobs, shucks, and foreign materials in the sheller.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a renewable throat plate which can be placed about the throat opening in the sheller to return it to its original size, and to prevent further wear and tear thereon.
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and efiiciency. These will become more apparent from the following description.
In the following detailed description of the invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the description.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a horizontal section through a conventional corn sheller of the type to which the invention is applicable, taken on the line |-l, Fig. 2; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section therethrough, taken on the line'2- -2, Fig. 1, illustrating the invention in place therein.
In Fig. 1, typical elements of a conventional corn sheller are designated'by numeral as follows: sheller housing l0, cob compartment ll, steel rod shelling cage l2 rotary beater-type shelling head 13, drive shaft [4, shuck distributing beater l5, partition plate I6, cone damper l1 and cover 22.
In the usual corn sheller the steel rod shelling cage I2 is supported at each of its extremities in four arcuate quadrant members 20, in which the extremities of the rods 12 are secured.
These quadrant members 20 are clamped to the partition plate l6 by means of suitable bolts 2| there being three bolts in each quadrant member.
The partition plate l6 has a circular throat opening 18 surrounding the damper ll. The damper I1 is spring cushioned and allows the shucks and cobs to exit from the sheller housing I into the cob compartment 1 I.
The circumference of the throat opening l8 constantly wears away from abrasion with the material passing through the throat opening, due
to the pressure and rotation of the damper H. The opening therefore rapidly wears larger so as to prevent accurate control, resulting in loss of This invention comprises an annular, fiat, steel throat plate l9 having an inner diameter equaling the original inner diameter of the throat opening E8. The improved throat plate 19 is positioned between the partition plate l6 and the quadrant members 20 and is clamped between the two by means of the clamping action of the bolts 2|. The throat plate 19 acts as a reinforcement for the throat opening 18 and renews the latter to its original size and condition.
It is preferred to form the throat plate of thicker material than the partition plate [6 so that it will better resist wear and erosion. However, should it wear it can be easily renewed and replaced by simply loosening the bolts 2|.
While a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is desired to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired secured by Letters Patent is:
In a corn sheller, the combination of a partition plate having a throat opening; an annular throat plate lying against one face of said partition plate and outlining said opening; arcuate rod-supporting members lying against said throat plate; bolts clamping said arcuate members against said throat plate and said throat plate against said partition plate; and a cylindrical series of steel rods mounted in said arcuate members and forming a shelling cage.
