United States Patet Patented Sept. 22, 1959 CORN PICKER ROLLER Carl J. Nelson, St. James, Minn.
Application January 10, 1958, Serial No. 708,105
3 Claims. (Cl. 130-5) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in corn picker rolls and has for its. primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising a novel construction and arrangement of parts. whereby the cars will be cleanly snapped from the stalks and husked without damaging or disturbing the kernels.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a corn picker roll of the character described wherein the parts may be readily replaced when necessary.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a corn picker roll of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, reliable in use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a corn picker roll constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section through the device;
Figure 3 is an end elevational View;
Figure 4 is a view in transverse section, taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the invention, showing the parts separated.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a metallic shaft 6 of suitable length and diameter. Mounted at an intermediate point on the shaft 6 for rotation therewith is a wooden roller which is designated generally by reference character 7. The roller 7 comprises duplicate half sections 8 between which the shaft 6 passes. Enclosing the roller 7 is a longitudinally split, tubular cover 9 of hard rubber or other suitable material, said cover including spiral ribs 10. The cover 9 is replaceable and said cover is removably secured on the roller 7 by means comprising a clamping bar 11 which is engaged with the longitudinal marginal portions of said cover. The bar 11 is apertured at longitudinally spaced points, as at 12, for the passage of stud bolts 13 which are screwed into openings 14 provided therefor in the shaft 6. The sections 8 have formed therein opposed grooves or channels 15 defining openings in the roller 7 for the passage of the bolts 11.
Keyed at 16 on the forward end portion of the shaft 6 is a spirally ribbed conical point 17 of suitable metal. The point 17 is provided, on its rear end, with an integral, annular flange or ring 18 which encircles the forward end portion of the cover 9. A notch or recess 19 in the ring accommodates the forward end portion of the bar 11. The point 17 abuts the forward end of the roller 7.
Keyed at 20 on the rear end portion of the shaft 6 and abutting the rear end of the roller 7 is a metallic cylinder 21. The cylinder 21 includes, on its forward end, an integral annular flange or ring 22 which encircles the rear end portion of the cover 9. The cylinder 21 is for removing husks and corn stalks and toward this end said cylinder further includes circumferentially spaced, parallel, longitudinally extending rows or series of teeth 23. The ring 22 of the cylinder 21 is provided with a notch or recess 24 which accommodates the rear end portion of the bar 11.
Of course, the rolls are used in pairs, as usual. The construction and arrangement is such that the cover 9 may be readily removed for replacement, if desired. A plurality of metallic rods 25 are molded longitudinally in the cover 9 for reinforcing same.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A com picker roll comprising: a shaft having spaced openings therein, a roller removably mounted on an intermediate portion of said shaft and including duplicate half sections on opposite sides of the shaft, means for securing said half sections in position on the shaft, a longitudinally split, tubular cover enclosing the roller, 2. bar mounted on the longitudinal marginal portions of said split cover, stud bolts mounted in said bar and threadedly engaged in the openings for securing the cover in position on the roller, said half sections having opposed grooves therein defining passages aligned with the shaft openings for the passage of bolts, a substantially conical point fixed on the shaft in abutting engagement with one end of the roller, and a metallic cylinder fixed on the other end portion of the shaft in abutting engagement with the other end portion of said roller.
2. A com picker roll comprising: a shaft having spaced openings therein, a roller removably mounted on an intermediate portion of said shaft and including duplicate half sections on opposite sides of the shaft, a longitudinally split, tubular cover enclosing the roller, a bar mounted on the longitudinal marginal portions of said split cover, stud bolts mounted in said bar and threadedly engaged in the openings for securing the cover in position on the roller, said half sections having opposed grooves therein defining passages aligned with the shaft openings for the passage of the bolts, a substantially conical point fixed on the shaft in abutting engagement with one end of the roller, and a metallic cylinder fixed on the other end portion of the shaft in abutting engagement with the other end portion of said roller, said conical point and said cylinder including integral rings on one end encircling the cover and having recesses therein accommodating the end portions of the bar.
3. A corn picker roll comprising: a metallic shaft, said shaft having longitudinally spaced threaded openings therein, a roller removably mounted on an intermediate portion of the shaft and including duplicate half sections for the reception of the shaft therebetween, a longitudinally split, tubular cover removably mounted on the roller and including spiral ribs, a clamping bar engaged with the longitudinal marginal portions of the split cover, bolts mounted in said bar and threadedly engaged in the openings for securing the cover in position on the roller, the half sections of said roller having opposed grooves therein defining passages for the bolts, a conical point on one end portion of the shaft, and a metallic cylinder on the other end portion of the shaft, said cylinder ineluding spaced, parallel longitudinal series of teeth, said point abutting one end of the roller and ineluding an integral ring encircling the cover, said cylinder abutting the other end of the roller and further including an integral ring on one end encircling the other end portion of the cover, said rings having recesses therein ac- 5 commodating the end portions of the bar.
