The parts are held together by cooperating means when in closed position, and they have associated therewith closure holding means which are entirely concealed from view wherr'the cover is placed on the container body and moved into closed position.
The container is particularly characterized by the fact that'at-least a certain-= portion of the facing surfaces of thecooperating members are at least partially planar and that these planar surfaces, herein referred toas faces, are in face-to-face contact during the time the cooperating members are in closed relation ship and in sliding face-to-face contact during 4 the other member when the container is in closed position. The end members thus lend a neat appearance to the ends of the container, as illustrated in Figure 2, and also serve as stops to limit the forward motion of the cover member 22 when the container is closed.
A groove 25 is provided in the projecting portion of the end member 23 of the first cooperating member 2| and a pair of cooperating lugs 26 are provided on the end of the second'cooperating member 22 so as to engage the groove 25 when the container is in closed position. A similar groove and cooperating lugs, and 32, are provided at'the opposite end of the container. A tongue 29 extending from one planar contacting face'is received into a guide-groove 3| in the the movement of the cover to-openor'clo'se' the container, as will be hereinafter described; For
convenience, and without intending any limitation, movement of the cover with respect-to the container body to close the container is referred to as movement in' the forward direction, and
reverse movement isreferred to as movement in the rearward direction.
Likewise, the end of' the box, or parts thereof, appearing at the left in" Figure 1 will sometimes hereinafter be termed forwardly or forward end and the other end ceeds that the location Of these elements'may be reversed, if'desired, and,v furthermore, that the designation of either particular one of the' cooperating members as the container body and the other one as the container cover is purely arbitrary and for the sake of convenience only. Also, by way of simplifying the'descriptiom the relative movement of the cooperating members when the container is closed and" opened is re-' ferred to merely as the movement of the second cooperating member, or cover, into closed or open position-respectively. It will be further apparent that the shape of the interior" of the container is immaterial and the invention is notlimited thereby. In the drawing there isshownfor illustrative purposes a mahogany container adapted to house a safety razor during shipment and also to serve as a desirable storage container therefor between periods of use, this being but one of the many uses for which the container and closure means of the invention are adaptedi Referring now to Figure 1 a first cooperating member 2| and a second cooperating member 22 having planar contactingfaces 21 and, 28, respectively, are disposed so as to slide inface-toface contact upon one another. Each of the cooperating members is shown substantially rec tangular in cross-section, as in Figure 3, although it is apparent that they maybe of any other convenient shape, provided'they'are adapted to slide inface-to-face contact. Each of the members 2| and 22 is provided with an end member, ends 23 and 24 respectively; secured to,-- as by gluing, and projecting beyond the end'- surface of each respective membercso as to abutthe-end of opposite planar contacting face, by which relative longitudinal motion of the container parts is permitted but relative transverse motion prevented.
Referring now to Figures 5 and 8, the closure holding means comprises a pin-travel slot 33 located in a face 21 of the first cooperating member 2| in such a manner as to guide the travel -,of a pin 38, which protrudes therethrough and extends for some distance beyond the said face of the cooperating member. Below the pin-travel slot is a cavity or slider well 34 extending longitudinally through a portion of the member 2| and communicating with the bottom of the pintra'vel slot. A resilient means 35, such as a spring, is positioned in the slider well and serves to continuously'urge a slider 36, such as a wooden plug or piston fitted loosely into the cavity, forwardly in 'the'slider well. The pin 38 is secured in fixed position to the slider and thus travels in the pintravel slot as the slider travels in the slider well. The formation of the slider well and the assembling of the spring, slider and pin are effected conveniently before the end member 23 is secured to the first cooperating member 2 I.
A pin-retaining means is provided at the rearward end of-the pin-travel slot and may consist conveniently 'of a notch 39 .cut in the side of the pin-travel slot so as to provide a shoulder 40 constituting a square or even very slightly concave abutment for the retaining of said pin. Whenthe pin 38 is first moved rearwardly to the limit of its travel and then its upper end moved laterally with respect to its line of travel in such manner that the slider rotates slightly in the slider well, the pin engages the shoulder 40 and is effectively retained and prevented from traveling in a forward direction.
A'pin-engaging slot 4| (Figure 4) isprovided in the face of the second cooperating member, or cover, of the container and is so situated and aligned therein that when the twocooperating members-2i and 22 are in face-to-face contact, theportion of the pin 38 extending above the face of the first cooperating member 2| is received by the pin-engaging slot. In a container comprising first and second cooperating members held together in face-toface closed, or forward position by a plurality of engaging means and movable out of closed position, or rearwardly, by sliding movement of the one cooperating member along the face of the other cooperating member, closure holding means cooperating therewith comprising: means providing a pin-travel slotlocated in the face of said first cooperating member; a pin adapted to travel in said pin-travel slot forwardly in response to and rearwardly against resilient means and protruding beyond the face of the first cooperating member; pin-retaining means at one side of said pin-travel slot and adapted to engage and retain said pin at the rearward limit of its travel; means providing a pin-engaging slot located and aligned in the face of said second cooperating member for crossing said pin-travel slot at an acute angle and 7 extending, when the cooperating members are in face to face, or sliding, positions, toward said one side of said pin-travel slot and inclined toward the forward end of said pin-travel slot, said pin engaging slot being adapted to engage said pin throughout the length of its travel whereby engagement of said pin with said pin-retaining means is effected by the second cooperating member sliding rearwardly and disengagement of the said pin from said pin retaining means is effected by the second cooperating member sliding for-v ing position comprising a pin mounted in one of said members and extended toward the other of said members when same are in operative position for movement of said pin parallel to the direc tion of said relative sliding movement and rea silient means urging said pin in closure closing, or forward, direction; means permitting lateral movement of at least a portion of said pin at the rearward end of its said travel and means engaging said pin when in such laterally moved, or engaged, position preventing its movement out of said retracted position; means associated with the other of said members urging said pin backwardly and laterally into said engaged position as said closure member is slidingly moved rearwardly out of interlocking position and urging said pin in a lateral direction out of said engaged position as said closure member is moved forwardly toward interlocking position.

For a container member having a sliding closure member, said closure member having means interengaging with said container member holding said members against separation when in container closes; means providing a slot in the surface of the other of said members which surface faces said one of said members when they are in operative position and which slot is aligned parallel with the direction of said relative movement and having a recess at that end thereof representing the retracted or rearward position of the hereinafter mentioned pin and extending sidewardly in the same direction as the sideward extension of the slot in said first named member; a pin slidably positioned in said last-named slot and extending beyond said surface; means holding said pin for guided movement within said last-named slot and recess, and resiliently urging same toward the position occupied by it when said members are in closed, or forward, position; said parts being arranged whereby said pin'may be received into said angularly positioned slot when said members are in cooperative position,
6. In a container closure movable into and out from container closing position by relative sliding movement and wherein said closure and the container are provided with interlocking closure retaining means operable when said closure is in closed relationship with said container, the combination therewith of the improvement comprising: means resiliently urging the closure member and the container member toward interlocked position, said means including a longitudinally movable pin associated with one member and interengageable with said other member and at least partially laterally movable at that end of said longitudinal movement corresponding to the non-interlocked position of said members, and means receiving said pin when so laterally moved and holding said pin against movement in response to said resilient urging; means associated with the other of said members urging said pin backwardly and. laterally as said parts are relatively moved for container opening, and urging said pin in reverse lateral direction out of said engaged position as said members are urged toward container closing position.
7. which slot is aligned at an acute angle to the direction of relative movement between said members as same are moved into and out from said closed position said acute angle opening in the direction of resilient urging of the hereinafter mentioned pin; means providing a second slot in a surface of the other of said members which surface faces said one of said members when they are in normal operative position and which slot is aligned parallel with the direction of said relative movement and said second slot having a recess extending sidewardly in the said same direction as said first named slot is inclined to said second slot and at that end thereof occupiedbythe hereinafter mentioned pin when same is in its retracted position; a pin slidably positioned in said second slot and extending beyond said surface adjacent thereto and receivable into said first slot when said members are in normal cooperative position; means holding said pin for guided movement within said second slot and resiliently urging same toward the position occupied by it when said members are in said closed position; means permitting sliding movement between said parts along a single line preventing relative movement transverse thereto.

A chambered member and a closure member relatively slidable along a single line toward and away from a selected position with respect to each other and means in combination therewith yieldably urging said members toward said selected position comprising; means providing an L- shaped slot in a portion of one of said members normally facing the other of said members; said slot having one leg thereof aligned parallel with said single line; a pin and means supporting same rpm; resil'ient'means'urging 'saidpinjin such di. rection' to move said members toward said closed-relationship? "meanslimiting movement of said other member fin-said straight line direc- -tion.
11. Means releasably holding in closed relationship to each other a container member and a closure member therefor mutually slidable with respect to each other along, and only along, a single straight line, comprising: a movable pin and means supporting same mounted on one member and having a portion of said pin extending away from said member, and pin guide means guiding said pin for movement substantially transverse of its axis and parallel with the direction of said straight line, and locking means extending laterally from the portion of said guide means adjacent a position occupied by said pin when the members are moved out of closed position, said locking means receiving said pin for holding same from movement in said pin guide means; diagonally aligned guide means having a portion thereof in registry with said pin guide means and extending from said portion transversely in the same lateral direction as said locking means and longitudinally in the direction of pin movement as said members are closing, and associated with the other member for receiving the extending portion of said pin; resilient means urging said pin in such direction as to move said members toward said closed relationship.
12. Means detachably holding a contacting face of a first member against an abutment and a contacting face of a second member, said means comprising: means guiding said members for relative movement in a line with respect to each other and preventing movement with respect to each other transverse to said line; an L-shaped pin guide slot in said contacting face of said first member having a first leg parallel to said line and a second leg transverse to said line; a pin within the said pin guide slot extending perpendicularly away from said face of said first mem- 11 her and mounted in said slot for; movement along the length of both legs of said L-shaped 7 slot; means resiliently urging said pin in a direction parallel to said line and away from the seca and leg of said pin guide slot; anangular slot i in the contacting face of'said second member angularly positioned with respect to said line having one portion located in substantial register with the first portion of said L-shaped pin guide slot and extending laterally away therefrom in ;"the same direction as the second leg of the said L-shaped slot and extending longitudinally away from the said second leg of said L-shaped slot; fwhereby, when said pin is received into the'angujlar slot, upon retraction of said members away from a position effecting the contacting of said first member against the said abutment, one wall of said angular slot will urge said pin both longitudinally toward the end of that portion of said 'L-shaped slot parallel to said'line at which is located the transverse portion thereof and laterally in the direction of the extension of said transverse portion of said L-shaped slot, and when "said members are urged in a. direction for effecting contacting by said first member of the abutment' on said second member the other wall of said angular slot will first urge said pin out of the transverse portion of said L-sh-aped slot and i then said pin under the urging of said resilient 'means'will carry saidsecond member toward the point of its contacting said abutment. 13. Means holding a contacting face of a first member against an abutment and a contacting face of a second member, said means comprising: means guiding said.;members for relative movement ina line withrespect to each other and preventing movement with respect to each other 12 transverse to said line i a-movable pin and means supporting same mounted on one member and having a portion of said pin extending away from said member, and pin guide means guiding said pin for movement substantially transverse of its axis and parallel with the direction of said line and locking means extending laterally from the portion of said guide means adjacent a position occupied by said pin when said first member is moved away from the abutment on said second I member said locking means receiving said pin for holding same from movement in said pin guide means; diagonally, aligned guide means having aportio-n thereof in registry with said pin guide means and extending from said portion transversely in the same lateral direction as said locking meansandlongitudinally in the direction of pin movement as said members are movedinto abutting position and associated with the other member for receiving the extending portiongzof said pin; resilient means urging said pin in such direction as to move said members toward said abutting relationship. 7
