The principal object of our invention has been to provide a hand hoist which shall be light and compact, sturdy indesign, and of relatively few parts, whereby it may be inexpensively manufactured.
Another object has been to provide a two-part hand chain guide, one portion thereof being formed by an end wall of the frame or housing and the other portion being. detachably secured thereto, whereby one portion may be readily detached to" make the hand chain easily accessible for assembling or disassembling.
Another object has been to provide a hoist having a Weston brake located adjacent the inside hub of the hand wheel which latter part closely fits into the frame portion of the hand chain guide, whereby the brake will be enclosed within a chamber and thus protected against the accumulation of dust and dirt.
A further. object has. been to. provide a hoist with a single. gear reduction and with a loadlift wheel of relatively few teeth.
Moreover, the load chain guide. of our device is supported by one of the side. walls of the frame and may be made of. two coacting parts held together and to the wall by suitable fastening means.
Furthermore, our hoist may be provided with aligning inserts for the load chain guide. These inserts are carried: by one of the end walls, and thereby not only facilitate the machine work on the frame but provide means. for aligning the guide, as well as convenient assembly and disassembly.
The above objects andadvantages have been accomplished by the device shown in the accompanying drawings of which:

Our hoist is provided with but a single gear reduction and therefore has a gear pinion 33 mounted upon and formed integrally with a hand wheel shaft 34. The pinion 33 extends beyond the wall l3 and meshes with a load gear 56. The pinion and load gear are mounted within a gear chamber. 69 formed by a gear cover 6! which is secured to the frame l adjacent the wall 13. The load gear is non-rotatably supported upon a load wheel shaft 62, which shaft extends inwardly to a point adjacent the wall l2. This shaft is mounted in ball bearings 63 and 64 carried respectively, by the walls i2 and I3. The load-lift wheel 65 of our device is preferably provided with three teeth 66 formed integrally with the shaft 62. The load lift wheel is mounted in a wheel chamber formed between the side wall 12 and I3 and a portion of the outer wall ll together with the inner wall I4. Mounted within this chamber is a load chain guide H of our hoist. This guide may be of two-part construction having an outer member 12 and an inner member 73. The member 12 is formed with a hub portion 14 and with a flange portion of substantially the same size as the portion 13, whereby a recess is provided for the reception of the outer sides of the chain links lying in planes at right angles to the axis of the wall. The inner and outer members 12 and I3 of the load chain guide are secured in place by means of bolts 15. In order to facilitate the machining of the surfaces against which the chain guide is to bear, we have provided inserts 8 0 for each of the bolts 15, one of which being shown in section in Fig. 3 and both of which being showed in dotted lines in Fig. 1. These inserts are machined so that their end faces when in position will hold the guidein proper alignment, and, they are so proportioned in relation to the apertures in the end wall i3 with which they are engaged that they are frictionally held in place by a pressing fit. Astripper 8! is provided on our hoist and is located beneath the load-lift wheel 65. This stripper is held in place by means of screws 82 passing through the wall l2 and extension l6 thereof.
' The loose end 83 of the load chain 84 is mounted in a recess 81 formed in the housing In and is held therein by means of a pin 85. This pin is preferably formed on the end of one of the cover screws 86 and is disposed in a suitable hole formed in the housing. The ball bearings 36 and 64 are preferably held in place by a bearing retainer 90 which, as shown in Fig. 1, extends over a portion of these bearings, the end being concave as shown in Fig. l to conform substantially to the shape of the bearings.
The casing is provided with a top wall 9| above which is arranged a hook abutment 92 with which the stem 93 of the upper hook 94 is engaged- This abutment is in spaced relation with the top wall so as to provide a lateral channel 96 for the 4 accommodation of the nut 95 carried by the lower end of the hook stem 93.
What is claimed is:
1. A hoist comprising a frame having end walls and connecting side walls forming a load-lift wheel chamber, a load-lift wheel disposed in said wheel chamber and having a load-lift shaft supported in bearings carried by said end walls, a load chain engaging said load-lift wheel, a load chain guide mounted in said wheel chamber, inserts fixedly carried by one of said end walls and projecting into said wheel chamber, and means passing through said inserts and engaging said chain guide for securing the same in registration with the load wheel.
2. A housing comprising a frame having end walls and connecting side walls forming a loadlift wheel chamber and an operating shaft chamber, a load-lift wheel disposed in said wheel chamber and having a load-lift shaft supported in suitable bearings carried by said end walls, an operating shaft passing through said shaft chamber and supported in suitable bearings in said end walls, gear means connecting said load-lift wheel shaft with said operating shaft, a hand chain wheel carried by said operating shaft, a multi-part hand chain guide arranged about said wheel, one part of said guide being integral with said frame, and the other part thereof being detachably secured to the first part, a load chain engaging said load-lift wheel, a two-part load chain guide disposed in said wheel chamber, sleeve inserts carried by one of said end walls and having their inner faces in abutting relation to said load chain guide, and means for securing said last mentioned guide to the inserts.
3. A housing comprising a frame having end walls and connecting top and side walls forming a load-lift wheel chamber, a load-lift wheel disposed in said wheel chamber and having a loadlift shaft supported in suitable bearings carried by said end walls, an operating shaft supported in suitable bearings in said end walls, gear means connecting said load-lift wheel shaft with said operating shaft, a suspension hook abutment disposed between and integrally cast with said end walls, said abutm nt being in spaced relation with said top wall outside of said wheel chamber thereby forming a lateral recess, a suspension hook carried by said abutment, retaining means carried at the lower end of said hook and disposed in said lateral recess, a hand chain wheel carried by said operating shaft, and an annular multi-part hand chain guide, one part of said guide being integral with said frame and formed with an annular recess for the reception of the inner flange'only of said hand wheel, and the other part of said guide being detachably secured to the first part and formed with an upper wall extending across the chain groove of said hand chain wheel, whereby the joint between said guide parts is so positioned that when said detachable part is removed the hand chain will be accessible for removal.
4. A hoist comprising a frame having end walls and connecting side walls, one of-said end walls having an extension, an operating shaft mounted in suitable bearings in said end walls, a hand chain wheel carried by said operating shaft and having an inner flange and an outer flange, a Weston brake mounted upon said, shaft and located between said hand wheel and the end wall having the extension, an annular multi-part hand chain guide having a fixed'part and adetachable part, said fixed partbeing formed by said end wall and its extension, said end wall and said extension being formed with an annular recess for the close-fitting reception of the inner flange only of said hand wheel, whereby the brake will be substantially enclosed, said chain guide also having a separable part, and means for detachably securing said guide parts together.
5. A hoist comprising a frame, a load-lift Wheel carried by said frame, a hand chain wheel rotatably carried by said frame and having an inner flange and an outer flange, gear means connecting said load-lift wheel and said hand wheel, and an annular multi-part hand chain guide having a frame part and a detachable part, the joint between said chain guide parts lying in a plane substantially parallel with the flanges of said hand wheel, said frame part being integral with said frame and formed with an annular recess for the reception of the inner flange only of said hand wheel, said detachable part being secured to said frame part and formed with a laterally extending upper wall for engagement with said frame part to form therewith a house over the upper portion of said hand wheel, whereby the joint between said guide parts is so positioned that when said detachable part is removed the hand chain will be accessible for removal.
6. A hoist comprising a frame, a load-lift Wheel carried by said frame, a hand chain wheel rotatably carried'by said frame and having an inner 1 flange and an outer flange, gear means connecting said load-lift Wheel with said hand wheel, and an annular multi-part hand chain guide having a frame part and a detachable part, the joint between said chain guide parts lying in a plane substantially parallel with the flanges of said hand wheel, said frame part being integral with said frame and formed with an annular recess for the reception of the inner flange only of said hand wheel, said detachable part being secured to said frame part andformed with an inwardly and laterally extending wall for engagement with said frame part, said wall cooperating with said frame partto house the upper portion of said hand wheel, and a spacing sleeve carried at the lower portion of said detachable part for engagement with the frame part of said guide.

A hoist comprising a frame, said frame having end walls, side walls connected to said end walls, and a top wall connected to said end and said side walls, thereby forming a load-lift wheel chamber closed at its upper end, a load-lift wheel disposed in said wheel chamber and having a loadlift shaft supported in bearings carried by said end walls, a load chain engaging said load-lift wheel, a load chain guide mounted in said wheel chamber and located between said top wall and said load-lift wheel, said guide comprising an inner member and an outer member, said outer member having a hub portion and a flange portion, said hub portion abutting said inner member, whereby a chain receiving groove is formed therebetween, and fastening means passing through said inner member and the adjacent wall and threaded into said hub for holding said guide in alignment with said load chain.
