Description

Jan. 3, 1950 l.. A. MlNToN DETACHABLE ELECTRIC LIGHT FXTURE Filed Feb. 5, 1945 Patented Jan. 3, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DETACHABLE ELECTRIC LIGHT FIXTURE Leslie A. Minton, Portland, Oreg. Y
Application February 5, 1945, Serial No. 576,168
6 Claims. l
The present invention relates to electric lamp fixtures, and aims to provide a novel and improved quick detachable electric lamp xture whereby a lamp hanger or bracket may be quickly attached to and detached from a ceiling, wall, or other support, and permitting diierent iixtures to be used interchangeably.
Another obj ect of the invention is the provision of a novel joint between the fixture hanger, stem or bracket, and the supporting member, to permit the parts to be readily assembled and separated.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a bell or joint concealing member mounted on the hanger or bracket, and adapted to bear, under spring influence, against the ceiling, wall or other surface, without requiring adjustment.
With the objects above indicated and other objects hereinafter explained in view, my invention consists in the construction and combination of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved lixture, showing the outlet box and the bell or concealing member in section;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2--2 of Figure 1.
The xture as illustrated is for a ceiling of a room, although it will be understood that the improvements may be used for wall and other xtures.
The outlet box 1 is secured within the ceiling 8, or the wall or other supporting member, and has secured therein a socket 9.
A tubular hanger, stem or bracket I has a slip joint member II secured in one end thereof, and said joint member is adapted to slip into the socket 9, for the quick and convenient attachment of the stem Illv to the outlet box or supporting member.
In order to hold the stem in place, a V-shaped spring catch I2 is disposed Within the joint member II and has outstanding cam lugs I3 at its ends disposed Within apertures I4 in the member II to snap into apertures I5 in the walls of the socket 9, as seen in Figure 2, thereby holding the stem I0 in place. The catch I2 has a loop or eye I6 at its crotch embracing a pin I1 secured in the member I I.
The catch I2 is released from the socket 9 by means of a U-shaped slide member I8 movable in the member II astride the loop or eye I6, and said slide member is attached to the corresponding ends of a slide rod I9 movable in the member the arms vof the catch are sprung toward onev another, thereby retracting thevlugs I3 so that the stem I0 may be readily withdrawn from the socket 9. Y
The rod I9 has a bent back terminal portion 20 at the end of the stem I0 opposite to the joint member I I, disposed within a slot 2I in a, head 22 secured to the corresponding end of the stem I Il, and the terminal 20 is roughened to provide a nger piece for conveniently sliding the rod I9.
The wires 23 for the electric lamp or lamps exare connected with pins 24 secured within a blockl 25 of insulating material attached to the stem I0 near the joint member II. The pins 24 are adapted to slip into sockets 2S within a block 21 of insulating material carried by a plate or bar 28 secured to the socket 9, so that when the joint member II is slipped into the socket 9, the pins 24 enter the sockets 26, to make the electrical connections. The lead wires 29 which enter the outlet box 1 are connected to the sockets 26. Electrical connections are thus made when the stem I0 is attached to the outlet box.
The stem I0 has an opening 39 through which the wires 23 extend, a sheet metal bell or concealing member 30 is slidable, as at 3|, on the stem I0, and is connected by coil springs 32 with the stem, so that when the stem is connected with the outlet box, the ilared rim of the bell or member 39 will contact with the ceiling wall, or surface 8, the springs 32 which are concealed within said bell or member 3D will be stretched as the member II enters the socket 9, thereby holding said bell or member under pressure against the surface of the ceiling or wall around the outlet box 1.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that the stem I 0 or xture proper may be readily detached for purpose of repair, cleaning, or replacement, and different fixtures may be used interchangeably.
While I have described the preferred embodiments of the invention, it is to be understood that I am not to be limited thereto inasmuch as changes and modications might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having this described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. An electric lamp ilxture comprising a, supporting member, a stem having a slip connection with said member, a catch mounted in the stem to engage said member, a rod slidable in the stem and cooperable with said catch to disengage it from said member, and said rod having an actuating nger piece clear of said stem.
2. An electric lamp iixture comprising a Socket, a stem having a terminal portion to enter said V socket, a V-shapedl catch in said stem having terminal portions to engage said socket, a rod slidable in the stem, and a, U-shaped member connected to said rod t9 mpve-astride said catch to ,disengage it from said socket.
3. An electric lamp fixture comprising a supporting member, a stem one end of which has a slip-joint connection with said member, the sternl having a, head at its other idf'p'rovided Witha slot, a catch mounted in the stem to ,engage tsaid means connected to said concealing member and member, and a rod slidable in the stem and col operable with said catch to dsengage itfromsaid member, said rod having a finger piece in said slot. Y 4. An electric lamp flgfture comprising a sup- Psieg member, a ieifeeans cleaehably ,Conf @eine me Stem' to: 'said member., a Centraline member ldeil@ Oli the naar FQ @ale-stretti a Santee aroafifiagmember, @Spring operatively connected Ato 'said concealing member and stem @ad Parcells' actuating the @neming member te bpe'ative'resta an@ ai; attuate? terne@ by sa Stem aaeperatvely connects@ t0 thev tothe stem for maintaining the concealing member in its operative position.
