This invention relates to self-threading shuttles.
My invention is concerned with a self-threading shuttle of the same general type as that dis-'- closed in United States patent to Davis 1,573,227.
A specific object of my invention is to devise an improved construction of side delivery eye for the shuttle.
Another object of my invention is to improve the threading block to prevent catching of the thread between the side flange of the block and the wall of the block receivingchamber.
My invention will be explained in connection with the accompanying drawing in which A Figure 1 shows a shuttle construction of-the prior art, such as that shown in the Davis patent referred to above.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the'front end of a shuttle equipped with my improved side delivery eye.
Figure 3 is a plan view of Figure 2, a portion thereofbeing shown in section along a horizontal :plane passing through the center of the side delivery eye.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the improved side delivery eye shown from a point to the rear and somewhat in front of the delivery eye.
Figure 1 shows the general type of shuttle on which my invention is an improvement. I indicates the shuttle body which is provided with a bobbin chamber 2 in which is mounted the bobbin 3 in the usual manner. The front end of the body I is provided with a recess 4 having parallel side walls and forming .a chamber for receiving a threading block 5, the upper face of which is grooved to provide an open thread guiding groove or passage. A thread casting and guiding element 6 is supported near the rear end of the block and has the free end thereof positioned within the open thread guiding passage of block 5. The block is also provided with the usual thread directing apron 5b.
The shuttle body I is provided with a thread delivery slot located in the front end of the threading block recess :4 and connecting this recess to one side of the shuttle. A delivery eye 1 is positioned within the delivery slot and comprises a metallic sleeve-like element having a slot in one side thereof as shown generally at 23 in the Davis Patent 1,573,227. The outer end of the delivery eye opens into a thread guiding groove 9 formed in the side of the shuttle body. After leaving the shuttle eye, the thread from the bobbin 3 is alternately drawn along the groove 9 in one direction and then in the other. Eventu- 3 Claims. (01. 139-223) ally, the thread causes excessive wear in the wooden surface of the groove 9 on both sides of the delivery eye, and this causes undue roughening of the thread guiding surface and eventually makes it necessary to replace the shuttle. One object of my invention is to improve the delivery eye construction to avoid this difficulty.

more clearly shown in Figure 3. The rear end of the plate l0 extends beyond the cross-bolt 8 and is secured in position by means of the crossbolt which passes through an aperture formed in the plate as shown in Figure 3. The forward end of plate I 0 is suitably secured to the shuttle body by suitable means such as the screw ll. Plate [0 is; provided with a slotted aperture in alignment withthe thread delivery slot and carries onits be formed integrally by a casting operation. It

As shown in Figures 3 and 4, the plate In is curved in conformity with the surface of the thread guiding groove 9, and the plate provides a metallic surface for the groove 9 over portions thereof extending forwardly and rearwardly of the side delivery eye. This construction provides a smooth, hard wearing surface for the thread A coming from the bobbin 3, and thereby avoids the objectionable roughening of the surface of the groove as explained above.
In prior constructions according to Figure 1, there is a tendency for the thread A from the bobbin 3 to catch at the point B between the side flange 5a of the threading block 5 and the adjacent wall of the block recess 4. In order to overcome this objectionable feature, I extend the side flange of the threading block along the wall of the block recess and partly into the bobbin chamber 2 as shown at 5a in Figure 3. This construction places the corner or end of the flange 5a in a position such that the thread cannot be caught between the corner or end of the flange and the shuttle body. 7
It will be understood that the cross-bolt 8 serves two functions; first, it serves the usual function of securing the threading block 6 in proper position in the recess for the block in the shuttle body, and secondly, it serves to clamp the rear end of the guide plate I0 to the shuttle body.
