STOP-BOX FOR WATER AND GAS PIPES.-

SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,213, dated November 8, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER WHITE, a residentot' St. Louis, Missouri, have made anew and useful Improvement in Sto'p-Boxesibr Water and Gas Pipes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stop-box having t-heimprovement; Fig. 2, aplan Fig. 3, a side elevation of theupper end of the box, the cover being turned up; Fig. 4, a plan, a portion of the cover being broken away to exhibit themeans for locking the cover; Fig. 5,

' another plan, the cover being broken away at two places and turned horizontally around into a different position from thatshown in Fig. 4;

, Fig. 6, a sectional elevation of the upper end of the box; and Fig. 7, a sectional elevation .of the upper end of the box, the cover being raised.

The present improvement relates, mainly, to the construction and operation of the cover of the box.

A represents a stop-box for water and gas pipes, and, saving the present improvement, of the usual form.

B represents the cover of the box. It is circular in outline, and at its center is attached to an arm, Q, the attachment being such as to enable lhecover to be turned horizontally around in the top of the box. The arm 0 is extended and hinged to the box at c. The cover has agroove, 1 extending around and in its edge. The flange bf, above the groove, is larger in diameter than the-remainder of the cover, and when the cover is closed rests upon a ledge, a,in the top of the box. The

to enable that flange, as the cover is closed,

to pass a stud, a,which is attached to the box upon its inner side, and projecting inwardly into the box, the operation of the improvement being as follows:- To look the box the cover'B and arm O are turned down upon the hinge c, and the cover turned horizontally around upon the arm 0 until the notch 11 coincideswith the stud a, whereupon the cover falls into its seat upon the ledge a, and, as indicated in Fig. 4, the cover is then rotated upon the arm 0, so as to bring the notch b out of line with the stud at, for instance, as

shown in Fig. 5. In this position the cover cannot be raised upon the hinge 0, because of the stud a engaging in the groove 1), and be provide means by which the box can be guarded against interference from children, who, as stop-boxes have been made, can readily open them and make trouble by filling them with dirt and stones. In the present box, from having first to turn the cover around so as to exactly bring the stud and notch into coincideuce before it can be raised, and from these parts being concealed when the cover is closed, the interference inquest-ion is practically prevented. The cover is purposely made so that it cannot well be operated by the hand, it having two small holes, I) bt, in its top, on opposite sides of its center, the holes being preferably too small to admit the fingers; but byinsorting a suitable implement in them the operator can get suflicient hold upon the cover to enable him both to rotate it and to turn it back upon the hinge c. The hinge serves also to connect the cover to the box, so that it cannot be lost therefrom.

I claim-- 1 1. The stop-box A, having the cover B and arm 0, said cover at its center being attached to and rotating upon said arm, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the box A, stud a, cover B,-having the groove 1), and'fiange b notched at b and the arm 0, substantially as described.

3. The combination of the box A, having the ledge a and stud a, and the cover B, having the groove 1) and flanges b and b substantially as described.

4. The combination of the box A, having the ledge a and stud a, the cover B, having the groove 11 and flanges 1) b and the arm 0, hinged at c, substantially as described.
