Another object of the present invention is the provision of a novel loop spring clip in which the spring is so contoured and associated with the clip as to continuously apply a positive grip.- ping action but readily yields when the pencil or pen is. placed in the pocket whereby to per.- mit the clip to be forced over the material to which it is attached and maintain its gripping action.

A still further object is to provide a novel streamlined clip and a novel means and manner of mounting the clip for pivotal movement With-L- out the necessity of securing or rigidly affixing the clip to the cap or hollow body of the pencil or pen upon which it is mounted. This greatly facilitates the assembly of the clip as it requires no anchoring lugs, pivot or fulcrum pin or aligned openings in the clip and cap for the 1'8! ception of such a pin.

Further objects are to provide a construction of maximum simplicity, efiiciency, economy and ease of assembly and operation, and such furs ther objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and are inherently pose sessed thereby.

The invention further resides in the construe:- tion, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and while there is shown therein a preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change, and comprehends other details, arrangements of parts, features and constructions without departing from the ;pirit of the invention.

The bifurcations 9, 9 are so spaced as to span and receive therebetween the curved er areuat por ion 2 of the clip in the manner shown in Fi 2 and Fig. 6. To permit the clip to fulcrum or pivot in its assembled position, the end it of the arcuate part 2 is provided with a depending reduced extremity I5, and adjacent thereto with a shoulder or led e 16 so contoured as to seat upon the edge I! defining one end of the vertical slot 3 in the cap and to fulcrum or pivot about this edge.

The. loop spring 5 is disposed wholly within t e cap 5 and by mounting the inturned up or hook H upon the shoulder or offset i2 with the curved bifurcations 9, 9 spanning the arena ate part 2 of the clip and disposed within and conforming to the interior rounded end 4 of the cap, and with the upright portions [3; ID of the bifurcations disposed or positioned against the interior of the cap, the spring is inaccessible tothe exterior. Furthermore, by this construction and arrangement, the clip is sp'ringeloaded whereby when the rdunded tip 8 and shank 7 of the clip are pulled or forced-away from the exterior of the cap, the shoulder or ofiset- I2 bears ing against the inturned lip ll of the spring; causes the lip to rise with it and thus places'the' spring under greater tension, whereby a posi tive gripping action is accorded the shank. Upon release of the shank I, this spring causes the shank to return to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

From the above description and the disclosure in the drawing, it will be readily apparent that the invention comprehends a novel clip assembly comprising an integral and rigid clip and a spring so constructed and arranged as to assure a positive spring-actuated assembly that is simple in construction and operation, and one that may be quickly and easily assembled and disassembled. As the end of the cap is slotted symmetrically or to the same depth at each side thereof, the clip may be assembled from either side of the cap, thus further facilitating its assembly. When so mounted, the arcuate part of the clip is pivoted or fulcrumed about the edge 'l-l on the cap at the base of the slot 3.

Having thus disclosed my invention, I claim:

1. A clip assembly for a pencil and the like, comprising a hollow cap closed at one end except for a slot extending vertically thereaoross, comprising a clip having a rigid shank provided with a rounded tip at one end and an arcuate part at the other end received in the slot, and a loop spring disposed within the cap for spring-loading the clip and applying a positive gripping preS- sure to the shank and tip, said spring having curved bifurcations at one end spanning the arcuate portion of the clip and seating against the interior of the cap and a lip bearing against the arcuate part whereby to apply a positive gripping action to the shank.

2. A clip assembly for mechanical pencils, fountain pens and the like, comprising a cap provided with a slot extending vertically across the outer end of the cap, a clip having a shank for mounting and retaining the cap upon a pocket or other support and a part adapted to be received within the slot and extending across the outer end of the cap where it is fulcrumed upon an edge of the cap at the base of the slot, a shoulder provided on said part and a loop spring disposed wholly within the cap and having one end conforming to and in contact with the interior of the cap and the other end engaging the shoulder for retaining the clip in assembled relation and under tension.

A clip assembly for a pencil, fountain pen or the like, comprising a cap provided with a slot in the outer end thereof, a clip having a rigid shank disposed longitudinally of and at the exterior of the cap and a part conforming substantially to the end of the cap and received in the slot, a projection depending from said part and provided with a shoulder, and a loop spring disposed within the cap adjacent the end thereof and provided with spaced bifurcations disposed at the opposite sides of said part and conforming to and engaging the interior of the cap and an end. seating upon said shoulder for tensionally urging the shank against the exterior of the cap.

A clip assembly for a pencil, fountain pen and the like, comprising a hollow cap open at one end and closed at the other end except for a slot extending vertically across the latter end of the cap and opening into the hollow interior thereof, a rigid clip having a shank disposed along the exterior of the cap and an arcuate part disposed within the slot and having a shoulder fulorumed upon an edge of the cap at the base of the slot and a projection extending into the cap, and a spring mounted wholly within the hollow of the cap at the slotted end and having a part bearing against the interior of the cap and a part engaging the projection on the arcuate part of the clip for tensionally mounting and retaining the arcuate part within the slot and continuously urging the shank to press against the exterior of the cap.

A clip assembly for a pencil, fountain pen and the like, consisting of a hollow cap provided with a vertical slot extending across the upper normally closed end thereof and opening into the hollow interior thereof, a, clip having an arcuate part disposed within the vertical slot and fulcrumed upon an edge of the cap at the base of the slot and a projection on the arcuate part depending into the hollow interior of the cap and provided with a shoulder, and a spring mounted wholly within the hollow interior of the cap for retaining the arcuate part within the slot and having a hooked end bearing against the shoulder on the projection and an end bearing against the interior of the cap at the slotted end for maintaining the clip under tension.

A clip assembly for a pencil, fountain pen and the like, consisting of a hollow cap having a vertical slot extending across the upper end thereof and opening into the hollow interior of the cap, a clip having a part received within the vertical slot and fulcrumed upon an edge of the cap at the base of the slot, said part havin a projection depending into the hollow interior of the cap and provided with an outwardly directed shoulder, and a spring disposed within the hollow interior at the upper end of the cap and having one end bearing against the interior of the cap and the other end hooked and bearing against the shoulder to provide interlocking engagement with the projection on the clip for maintaining the clip assembled and under spring tension.

'7. A clip assembly for a pencil, fountain pen or the like, comprising a hollow cap closed at one end except for a slot extending vertically thereacross and opening into the hollow interior of the cap, a clip having a rigid shank provided at the exterior of and extending longitudinally of the cap and an arcuate end conforming to and disposed and retained within the slot and having a projection extending into the hollow interior of the cap and provided with a shoulder, and tension means for spring-loading the shank whereby to tensionally retain the shank against the exterior of the cap, said means including a loop spring mounted within the hollow closed end of the cap adjacent the slot and having one end bifurcated with the bifurcations spanning the arcuate end of the clip and bearing against the interior of the cap at the closed end thereof and a hook at the other end engaging the shoulder of the projection on the arcuate end of the clip for tensionally retaining the clip in assembled relation.
