Description
UNITED STATES HIRAM B. NIOKERSON, OF ORLEANS, MASSACHUSETTS.
MECHANICAL MUSICAL INSTRUM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,200, dated November 8, 1881.
Application filed February 25, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HIRAM B. NIOKERSON, of Orleans, in the county of Barnstable and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Organettes, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in combining with the reed-board ot' an organette a set of recnrved sounding-pipes,thevalve ends of-which open downward and are closed by a valve on the upper face of the valvedever. The lever in its downward stroke actuates the bell-hammer.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section, showing one setof my devices, consisting of the reed, its chamber, the recurved pipe, valve and lever, and bell and hammer. Fig. 2 shows, partly in elevation and partly in vertical section, my device for forming the vacmum-pipes.
Let A represent the upper part of the body of the organette, the bellows being placed below this part.
A is the wind-chamber, at the top of which I place the reedboard B, which has a set of reeds, one of which is shown at C, Fig. 1. Above and attached to the reed-board B is the part D, which is made in the form of a segment of a cylinder, as shown in Fig. 1, and is provided with a set of channels or curved passages D. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) The channels D, being covered by a thin veneer, E, form a series of recurved pipes the mouths of which open downward.
H is a lever, having a valve, n, which closes the end of the pipe D. The end L of the lever H is shaped,as shown,s0 that it maypass up- Ward through the holes in the music-paper and allow the valve n to open, and thus cause its reed to sound. That part of the paper that is not perforated depresses the end Lot the lever H. Thus closing the valve n stops its reed from sounding.
M and M are two grooved rollers, which serve to keep the musio-paperin place, andyet, by their grooves, allowing free action of the levers H L. The levers H L are pivoted at K, and are provided with suitable springs, 22.
N is a hammer pivoted at W and held up bythc spring S. This hammer is operated by the lower end of the lever H L, and made to strike the bell P when desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patentis- In an organette,-the combinationof the reedhoard B and the set of recurved pipesD with the valves 42, levers H L,rollers M M ,and music'sheet, all arranged to operate substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
HIRAM B. NIOKERSON.
