ATTORN EYS Patented Dec. 20, 1949 SWING Grover Revelle and Bascom S. Revelle, Sr., Frederiektown, Mo.
Application January 18, 1946, Serial No. 642,007
4 Claims. (Cl. 15565) ful improvements in swings, and more particularly to a device of this character in which suspension means is provided forwardly and rearwardly of the seat of the swing, and providing hand and foot grips at the front end of the seat, whereby to cause a forward and backward swinging movement by pressure exerted on said hand and foot gripping means by the occupant of the seat.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a seat structure having a vertical bar pivoted at the front end thereof and formed with hand and foot gripping means, together with a seat member slidably mounted on the seat structure toward and away from the vertical bar to automatically adjust the position of the occupant of the seat during the swinging action.
A further object of the invention is to provide a swing of this character in which the parts entering into the construction thereof are reduced to a minimum and are simply constructed to promote economy in the manufacture of the article, and also in which the parts may be easily and quickly assembled, without requiring special tools.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character which is stron and durable, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing the slidably mounted seat.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a seat-supporting bar which is of U-shaped construction to provide a pair of spaced parallel legs 6 and l forming a slot 8 therebetween.
The bar 5 is supported in a substantially horizontal position by means of a rope, cable or other flexible member 9 suspended from a suitable supporting structure (not shown) and attached at its lower end to the rear end of the bar 5.
A bolt or pin ID extends transversely of the open end of the bar 5 through the legs 6 and 1 2 intermediate portion of a vertical bar I l, the vertical bar being positioned between the legs 6 and 1 at the front end of the slot 8.
A peg I2 is inserted through an opening H3 in the lower portion of the bar I l and projects outwardly at opposite sides of said bar to provide a pair of foot-supporting pegs while a similar peg l4 extends transversely through the upper end to provide a pair of hand grips at the upper end of the bar I l.
The upper end of the bar H is shaped to form a horse or other animal head l5 to the top of which is attached the lower end of a rope or cable It which also is suspended from the supporting structure.
A seat ll of flat construction is slidably mounted on the upper edges of the legs 6 and l of the seat-supporting bar 5 and is formed at its front end with a forwardly projecting tongue I B which overlies the slot 8.
The bottom of the seat I! is formed with a 1ongitudinally extending rib or plate l9 which preferably extends substantially throughout the depth of the slot 8 and is slidably received in the slot in substantially close fitting engagement with the opposed sides of the slot to prevent twisting of the seat on the seat-supporting bar 5.
In the operation of the device a person occupying the seat 1'! places his legs on the lower pegs l2 and grips the upper peg I 4 with his hands. Forward and backward pressure exerted on. the pegs I2 and I4 causes a longitudinal swinging movement of the seat-supporting bar 5. The seat I! is adapted to slide forwardly and backwardly on the upper edge of the seat-supporting bar 5 during the vertical pivotal movement of the bar ll, whereby to automatically adjust itself during the motions of the occupant of the seat.
It is believed that the details of construction, manner of use and advantages of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
It is to be understood, however, that even though we have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of our invention, the same is susceptible of certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described, and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:
1. A swing comprising a seat-supporting bar having a longitudinally extending slot therein, a vertical bar pivotally connected to one end of said seat-supporting bar and disposed in the corthereof and on which is pivotally supported the responding end of said slot, suspension means connected to the opposite end of said seat-supporting bar and to the top of said vertical bar, and a seat slidably mounted on the upper edge of said seat-supporting bar and including guide member on its under side slidably received in said slot, whereby said seat is movable toward and away from said vertical bar.
2. A swing comprising a seat-supporting bar having a longitudinally extending slot therein, suspension means at the ends of the bar, a seat slidably mounted on the upper edge of the bar, and a longitudinally extending rib on the under side of the seat slidably received in said slot.
3. A swing comprising a seat-supporting bar having a longitudinally extending slot thereiny porting bar providing a pair of spaced parallel legs forming a longitudinally extending slot therebetween, a vertical bar pivoted to the front end of seat-supporting bar, hand and foot grips at the upper and lower ends respectively of said vertical bar, flexible suspension means attached respectively to the rear of the seat-supporting bar to the upper of said vertical bar, a seat slidably mounted on the upper edge of the seatsupporting bar, and a longitudinal rib on the under side of the seat and slidably received in said slot.
