Description
JOHN II. COBURN,V OF LOW'ELL, )[ASSACIII SETTS, AS-HONOR TO RONWVELI. DOIN'IIJSS.
. OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETIS.
WEAVERS SHUTTLE.
Specication of Letters Patent. No. 2,489, dated March 12, 1842.
.'o a?? whom it may eoncern Be it known that I, JOHN H. Comuni, of Lowell. in the county of Middlesex, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in VeaVerS" Shuttles. of which the following description. taken in connection with the aecompanying drawings, forms a full and exact specification.
In the same I have set forth the nature and principles of my improvement.y by which it may be distinguished from others of a like character, together with such parte or combinationS as I claim. and for which I solicit Letters Patent.
Ot the drawings above mentioned. Figure l representeA a top view ot a shuttle constructed with my improvement applied to it. Fig. L2. is a central vertical and longitudinal section. Fig. 3, is a t1'an ;verSe vertical section taken through the bobbin head.
My improvement consists in the method of securing or confining the hobhin in the Shuttles from which it can easily be removed at any time whenever requisite.
In F l and 2 A representa` the shuttle and B is the bobbin. In Fig. 2, the position of the latter is exhibited by dotted lines. The bobhin has an angular or other proper Shaped groove e Figs. l, Q, formed in its; head whit-ln when it 1s in place, rests and is: received upon an angular and Semieircillar piece of metal Figs. 2, 3, inserted and properly confined in the rear of the interior of the shuttle in the position seen in the drawings. The space or opening of the shuttle above the piece Z), is eut out large enough to admit the head of the bobbin to be inserted into or removed from the shuttle. The bobbin head is pressed down upon the angular piece of metal by a lever (l c, turning on a fulcrum or pin f passing through the shuttle. and the lower end ot' a piece of metal 'f/ .secured to and projecting from the lower eide of the lever c in proximity to its end e, as seen in the drawings. A helical or other suitable spring /z Fig. Q, forces up the end and consequently depresses the end c ot the lever upon the bobbin head and thual in connection with the piece of metal /1` contines the bobbin in place. Therefore in order to remove the bobbin, it only beeomeel necessary to prese the thumb upon the end ot' the lever r/ c so as to bring Said lever into the position denoted by the dotted lines. rl`he end otl the lever is thurs` retracted from the bobbin heat -and the bobbin may be lifted t'rom its4 place.
Having thus described my invention I shall claim- Securing the bobbin in the shuttle. by means ot' the spring lever e combined with the eemicix'cular angular piece I), the whole being arranged and operating substantially as described.
In testimony that the foregoing is a true description of my said invention and improvements I have hereto Het my signature this twenty ninth day of January in the year eighteen hundred and forty two.
JOHN II. COBURN.
litnesses J. A. KNowLEs, JosIAI-I CHANDLER.
