SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,967, dated November 1, 1881.

Application filed August 1, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GHARLEs E. WnsTooT'r, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detachable Buttons; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, t-aken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming apart of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to that variety of buttons in which the shoe is composedot' two parts or halves which are capable of being brought into a position parallel with the button-head, to retain the button in the article to which it is applied, and are also capable of being turned into a position at right angles to the buttonhead for convenience of application and removal, the said parts of the shoe being held in said positions by a spring 01' springs.

My improvement consists in a button composed of a head to which is attached a divided or two-part spring-post and a two-part shoe having flat-faced meeting edges, and pivoted through such edges to the post, all as hereinafter specified and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a view of the back of the button, the shoe-members being parallel with the buttonhead. Figs. 2 and 3 show side elevations of the same, with the two-part shoe in ditt'erent positions. Fig. 4 is a view at right angles to Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 shows, in perspective, the post-members and shoe-members detached.

A is the button-head, and B B are the two spring-members which constitute the post. This post may be made of one piece of stock. divided or bent to form the two members B B, oritmay be made of two separate pieces secured to the button-head.

To the outer ends of the post 13 B are hinged the two parts (3 C, composing the shoe, and said parts are retained in positions parallel with and at right angles to the button-head by the spring function of the post. The pivotal portions 0 c of these parts have flat adjacent edges, which serve the better to retain the parts parallel with the button-head. The outer edges of the parts 0 O are preferably bent, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5, in order that said edges may be conveniently separated when the parts are to be moved into a position parallel with the button-head.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

Theherein-described detachable button composed of the head A, the divided or two-part spring-post B B, and the two-part shoe G C, provided with the portions 0 c, the adjacent edges of which are flat, the. said shoe being pivoted in the lower end of the post, the whole being constructed and arranged to operat substantially as described.
