DENNIS LEONARD, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
COFFlN-HANDLE.
S PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,865, dated November 1, 1881.
Application filed June 4, 1881.
Improvements in Casket or Ooffin Handles;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it,
reference bcinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to casket or coffin handles; and it consists in a coffin-handle as an article of manufacture corrugated upon its surface, and wound with thread, silk, floss, or
similar material, and in parts and combination of parts, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
In the drawings, Figure l is aperspective view of a coffin-handle constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View ofthe same, showingin detail its construction and parts.
A A are ordinary attachmentplates adapted to receive the screws by which the handlesarc secured to the casket, and are preferably composed of metal, as are also the arms or socket parts B B.
Ois the hand-piece, which ispreierably-made of wood or other light material, having, as
shown in the drawings, upon its outer surface threads or spiral grooves 0. These corrugations may be varied indefinitely without departing from my invention, or they maybe (No model.)
dispensed with altogether. I prefer, however, to corrugate or roughen the surface of thehandpiece, for the reason that when covered with thin floss or silk the light striking the handle forms along the ridges of the corrugations a bright streak from one end of the handle to the other, which is pleasing to the eye. This hand-piece may be wound with any kind or colored thread desired, and thereby made very cheaply.
The handpiece 0 is secured in placeby means of the screws D D, passing through suitable washers, E, and the socket parts B into the ends of the hand piece.
I am aware that coflin-handles have heretofore been made and covered with a textile fabric having a seam upon its back side or portion, and also that others have been covered ercd with a textile fabric by means of plaiting or braiding.
What I claim is As an improved article of manufacture, a casket or coffin handle having a rigid core or hand-piece provided with a covering of thread or like material wound thereon, substantially as arid for the purposes shown.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DENNIS LEONARD.
